This are my suggested steps:

1. Analyze the question to identify what kind of pointers to look out for - e.g. is it \"why\" (reasons, advantages etc.) or \"how\" (methods, procedures etc. ).

2. Pick out pointers (content is 8 marks, language is 4 marks, so with that as basis, students should set out target of finding 6-8 pointers). Do not include quotes, examples and analogies unless necessary.

3. Count the no. of words from those pointers picked out in step 2. In this way, you will know how many words you need to reduce. If the count at this moment exceeds 100, chances are, you have picked out additional/unnecessary pointers in step 2.

4. Start reducing word usage by rephrasing language expression (e.g. 应 instead of 应该, 若 instead of 如果, 可/能 instead of 可以) instead of simply omitting pointers. Adjectives can also be sacrificed/removed.

Will kiv for DS’ JC1 H1 CL paper. Is that when he will be introduced to Summary component? Not in O level CL right?

Thanks for sharing too, zac's mum. Yup, for CL, summarization will only come in A Level H1 Paper 2. Difference between A Level H1 summary and O Level HCL summary is the former's word limit is 70 words whereas the latter is 80 words.

Paiseh to ask this strange qn. For Oral passage reading, do the examiners actually look at the passage text while the candidate is reading it aloud? Or do they usually just listen (maybe looking at candidate’s expression or other things)?

There is a rubric, to assess Secondary school students for Oral. Your son can refer to this rubric, given out by his class Chinese Teacher, to see how he will be assessed for Oral.

Yes, the examiners will look at the text - but not all the time, i.e. there will still be regular eye contact/looking at the candidate while he/she reads (so that they can note the no. of mispronunciation).

While the examiners won't count the exact no. of mispronunciations, they will be able to gauge if pronunciation （语音）：
- 准确
- 相当准确，有一点错误
- 还算准确，有一些错误
- 不准确，有很多错误
and grade them according to the appropriate level（等级）'s mark range.

Thank u so much chenlaoshi. I was worried will have deduction per mis-read word. I did not have the passage on hand (DS held the only copy) so i just listened & heard accurate 4 tones, appropriate pauses, correct rhythm of common phrases, expression & emphasis (but i couldn’t understand some strange pairing of words so i knew he had mispronounced them, albeit with conviction that he’s saying the right thing :roll: ) I hope that is good enough for a pass but of course he should practice more. We are using O level passages cos couldnt find Sec 1 level

I see. Regarding oral passage reading practice materials, cloze passages would be a good source - can use previously completely exercises.
