I think answer is paper is a poor conductor of heat. As the paper can’t conduct heat away quickly so it will absorb and burn?

Looking at the discussions above, tried to use AI for an answer and the result is

A paper lantern with metal coil holding candle, got into fire. This experiment shows
        Choose the below answer
        1) paper is a poor conductor of heat
        2) metal is a good conductor of heat

The answer is 2, metal is a good conductor of heat.

The paper lantern caught fire because the metal coil holding the candle transferred the heat from the flame to the paper. Paper is a poor conductor of heat, so it does not burn easily. However, the metal coil is a good conductor of heat, so it quickly transferred the heat from the flame to the paper, causing it to catch fire.

This experiment shows that metals are good conductors of heat, while paper is a poor conductor of heat. This is important to know for safety reasons, as it can help to prevent fires. For example, it is important to use a metal pot holder when handling hot pots and pans, as this will prevent the heat from being transferred to your hands. It is also important to keep flammable materials away from heat sources, such as candles and stoves.

The answer is 2, **metal is a good conductor of heat**.

Err... while paper is a poor conductor of heat, it does NOT mean it does not burn easily. What it means is that metal has a much higher melting point than paper.

1 Because the burnt part didn’t come into contact with the metal and if paper is a poor conductor of heat then heat would not be conducted from the paper to somewhere else

              -so it will burn.

this happen in air fryer or oven, when the paper touches the heating element it burns black mark but if the paper did not touch heating element it does not burn.

Exam over, kids and parents can finally relax. Go celebrate their effort.

One or two mcq, 2 marks qn will not be detrimental, unless anyone is aiming for full marks?

A kid i know, got AL4 in sci but in sec 1, kid got A1 for sci. Kid has been passionate for sci since pri.

Only from reading posts on qn here and there, I would choose paper is poor conductor. Without the actual qn, we are only guessing.

Don’t forget tho, Chat GPT failed PSLE math and science :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

That being said, think my girl wrote number four - is that the choice for metal?

All the best for results day, and good luck to those awaiting to take their last HMT paper. It will really be over in a couple hours. Well done to all the girls and boys and mummies and daddies. Time to let loose, we deserve it!!

The heat from the candle flame is transferred to the paper through the metal. Metal is a good conductor, while paper is a poor conductor, so heat accumulates in the paper, ultimately causing the paper to catch fire.

So, the correct answer should include both:

                    - Metal is a good conductor.
                    - Paper is a poor conductor.
                    Either option alone is incomplete.

This exam question seems to be flawed.

I agree... the exam is over, and nothing we can do now can \"improve\" our standing 😂
Since we don't have the exact question of what is being asked... it's impossible to guess what the right answer is.

Yup exams over but still curious to know the correct answer….so just discussing la, no harm also. 😃

I think the candle sits on a cardboard base and not touching any metal directly. Also, the metal piece is used as a handle. If it is in direct contact with the heat source, it would be too hot to touch isn’t it?
