Hi,
I am reaching out because I am currently in need of some assistance in securing two sponsors for my Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan’s application. I understand that this is a big ask, but I was wondering if anyone who would be willing to help.
If it’s not too much trouble, I would love to have the opportunity to meet with you at your convenience to discuss this further. Please leave a message here, I could PMed you directly.
Appreciate your help in advance. -
Hello all
I am currently looking out for 2 sponsorship for the SHHK membership.
I will truly appreciate your help .
Appreciate that anyone who is willing to help to reach out to me by PM. -
Note
For the child to join SHHK, the father must be hokkien, not the mother. Is the father's dialect group that is important. Not the mother.
Pls read the conditions, below
=====================
Dear Parent,
SHHK membership applicants must be Singapore citizens of at least 21 years of age and ancestry can be traced to Fujian Province.
We follow the Chinese traditional way of identifying the dialect group of a person via the paternal lineage, i.e. the father’s dialect group.
Hope this clarifies. Thank you.

It is possible for the parent volunteer (age >21) herself to qualify under SHHK for phase 2B if her birth certificate indicates Hokkien as her dialect group.
This is regardless of whether her child due for P1 registration is a Hokkien indicated in the birth cert.
I dunno if SHHK wants to tighten up the requirements further (to allow only if the young child is Hokkien by father’s blood) but so far they have not. -

SHHK has since changed and tightened their rules.

Only the father who is Hokkien, can volunteer.
Because
In my email, I was very specific. I asked SHHK,
\"if the mother Is a Hokkien, but father not Hokkien, can the mother still volunteer ? \"
And SHHK replied my email, do refer above answer. Only if the father is a Hokkien, then can. -

I’m afraid you may want to re-read their reply again.

Their reply directly refers to membership criteria, and for a child to join SHHK (which isn’t necessary for the purpose of P1 registration):
“ SHHK membership applicants must be Singapore citizens of at least 21 years of age and ancestry can be traced to Fujian Province...” Their reply doesn’t cover the volunteering criteria.
To be a member, you need to be a Hokkien. To a parent volunteer, you need to be a member. Only the child of a member (father / mom) is eligible for Phase 2B assuming the requirements are met. Can arrangements be made with the school for the father / mother to cover the spouse’s PV duties? Yes, check with school. -

Oh... this gets confusing. So for P1 Registration, it doesn't matter if the father or mother is a SHHK member?

It’s straightforward.

For the purpose of P1 registration, only the child of a member is eligible once all conditions are met.
For the purpose of membership registration, only people of Hokkien lineage are eligible. In Chinese tradition, SHHK follows the paternal lineage. For example, I’m Hainan and my wife’s Hokkien (like your family). Thus, my wife is eligible to be a member but my children and myself are not. -

Many thanks for the discussions here. I noticed a particular provision under the Singapore Constitution which suggests that this practice may be unconstitutional. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Rights in respect of education
16.—(1) Without prejudice to the generality of Article 12, there shall be no discrimination against any citizen of Singapore on the grounds only of religion, race, descent or place of birth —
(a)\tin the administration of any educational institution maintained by a public authority, and, in particular, the admission of pupils or students or the payment of fees; or
(b)\tin providing out of the funds of a public authority financial aid for the maintenance or education of pupils or students in any educational institution (whether or not maintained by a public authority and whether within or outside Singapore).
