Saw the MEP but don't know much abt it. Checked that it can replace an O subj later. Saw that some IP schools are centre for own students and I wonder why IP students would want to take it..that is for interest and later to continue as an A level subject?

Is it difficult to get into the MEP for a child who has interest in music but not so groomed into it yet? Higher commitment in time when it is not an in house prog it seems..also don't know how it works as the successful students need not take 2 lessons in Sec 1 & 2. Then what do they do during these periods? Go library and do homework? Any feedback/knowledge is appreciated.
Mep will take O level higher music exam and it can be used to replace humanities subj in L1R5. There is another option, O level music exam which cannot be used to replace humanities in L1R5 but can be used in its computation as extra subj. There is a test or audition for selection.

I understand from friend mum, kid will make use of in between lessons time to self study and do homework to make up for the additional time they need to travel to music centre sch and take music lessons.

In independent sch, taking mep gives incentive of $2400 per yr and some kids enjoy music instead of the usual humanities like geo, hist or lit. Usual its a smaller class too.

Is it true that MEP is not just theory? I thought i saw some schools have a requirement that MEP students must take up a music-related CCA (which entails many days of instrument practice & SYF and minor performances/concert etc).

          Yes, correct.

if u take MEP, must also take one Cca related to music.

Also, MEP is very time consuming. That’s why u are not allowed to take it concurrently with 3rd foreign language (Japanese / German / French / Spanish)

If you are offered both after clearing the MEP audition,
          then

the school will ask u to drop one of them.

            Hi There ,

Is there any chance that my kid can exempted Mother Tongue from sec 1? She is taking Hindi and also Hindi is not our Mother Tongue and its really getting tougher for her .
in Primary school they used to have Hindi in her own school but sec 1 onwards They don’t have and she has to go to the center once a week for lesson and its not enough .

Pls advise if anyone knows about it if we can appeal for Exemption MTL .

              1)
only MOE can answer you this question. You will need to write an email to MOE, seeking exemption. They will reply you Yes or No, after assessing.

              2)
              Alternately,
since the Sec 1 posting results already out yesterday,
              you can also

write to the Principal of that Secondary school which your P6 child has been posted too, and cc the HOD inside the email, to keep the HOD in the loop.

You can try! Chances are it is an uphill task!

Hihi sorry..can chk what you mean by chances ..an uphill task?

To get into MEP is tough?

To have MEP plus a prerequisite to join a music related CCA can be tough in terms of time & commitment?

To go for both MEP + 3rd language, will be tough in terms of time&commitment ?

To ask to be allowed to join MEP+3rd language is uphill task? or

To ask to drop the 3rd lang after the successful MEP admission, is an uphill task?

If you lived overseas and lost touch with the subject, you can ask for exemption.

\"Difficult\" or \"weekend class\" are not criteria for exemption. There are a lot of kids who face your situation... including Tamil students who have travel coz Tamil is not available in all schools.

For non Chinese speakers like Thai, Philippines, Myanmar etc, they also struggle with MT.

As mentioned before, no Secondary student allowed to take both MEP and 3rd foreign language. Between these 2, you can only choose 1.

                        1) dropping 3rd foreign language from MOELC, is very easy. Your daughter can drop anytime, assuming that she has selected 3rd foreign language and not MEP. Just fill up MOELC Withdrawl form, and she can exit out of her 3rd foreign language.

                        2) the challenging part about MEP programme is that

                        a) the MEP curriculum, by itself, is very time consuming

                        b) plus the compulsory accompanied Cca related to music, to this MEP, means you have added commitment burden, over and above MEP.

All these, will eat into your precious, valuable Revision time, for the rest of your other academic subjects, like your

                        Chinese, English, Humanities, Maths, Science.

Once you enter into MEP acceptance offer, should u want to withdraw from MEP programme, halfway through :-

MOE will not let u go.
MOE will counter ask you (student) instead -

why don't u go and drop other subject, instead ?

Because that was what MOE told my niece last time, when she wanted to withdraw out from MEP, halfway through. But MOE replied her firmly, \"No, not allowed to.\"

So, don't anymore commit into MEP, unless

you really sure that Yes, that's what I want ... ie. music is in her blood stream
