38.9% of the students (2021 cohort) scored RP75 and above is not so ideal. Which also means around 60% of the students scored less than RP75….

CJC students have to work hard, to make sure that they stay within the 40% if they want to get into more popular Uni courses.

Going to a JC where a larger proportion of students do better doesn’t mean a student can work less hard! It’s the same exam in the end. But I agree that they have to be less complacent, and recognise that their ranking within the school may not be a wonderful as it sounds.

Need to see whether the child has the self-discipline to manage own projects (and fellow project mates). I think the exam are modular systems ie half a year exam then no need deal with the content anymore, unlike traditional EOY.

And dun worry so much abt JC one time exam. It’s definitely not a fate-sealer. Can re-take. O levels also can re-take. It is only PSLE that has no option to voluntarily re-take.

Don’t worry too much about potential IP/JAE divide in IP JC, that it cause the child avoid it even it’s preferred school choice. divides, if any, will be only in the first few months, because after all IP students have known each other for longer time and JAE students are new to their circle. After getting to know each other they will start hangout together. Just like we adult join a new company, it will also takes time for us to get comfortable with the old staffs just like among themselves that have known each other for longer time. My kids joined IP JCs through JAE and they don’t face any divide issue. Even if there are any divides, I think likely are isolated incidence and is due to the characters of those students and not due to IP majority/ JAE minority environment. Dont avoid IP JC just because of this concern. Students should have confident in themselves too. They qualified for IP JC having handled 7/8 O level subjects compared to IP students’ 4 PSLE subjects . Up to 30% of these IP students were from DSA intake, from very diverse background too.

If given a choice, I would prefer a modular system. No need to think of those modules anymore once exams are over. Can truly enjoy June/Dec holidays. For A level students who are hardworking, June/Dec holidays may be spent mugging. Poor thing.

Regarding self-discipline, be it A levels or Poly, to do well in both courses one needs to have strong self-discipline in order to enter choice courses in local Uni.

80% of A level students proceed to local Uni but to fit the local A level curve with RI/HCI/IP students, the competition is intense. If we assume close to 100% of RI/HCI can make it to local Uni, then what is the percentage of the lower tier JCs making it to Uni? Likely less than 80%

I would think Poly competition is less intense but only 3 in 10 from Poly will make it to local Uni. If the kid belongs to the other 7 in 10, then might have to come out to work first then attend private Uni after a working stint.

                    If go Poly,
your score is accumulative. Is better to maintain your academic standard in every single Term, instead of say,

If don't do well in Term 1,
then try hard to catch up in Term 2 fast, because by then, u will feel pressurised, because your one Term already gone past !

                    Thus, if go Poly,
you really need to be very disciplined, if u are those students targeting GPA 3.8 or 3.9, that type.

Much less than 80% for the lowest few JCs. I believe that the rate of getting into local university is roughly 3 in 10 for the lowest few JCs, MI and polys.

That will be around 30% same as poly like leeyl says. If get into poly can only keep reminding dd to have more self discipline. We went back to the poly today thought of getting more info on another school..it was so quiet, all closed. Cleaner says Sat & Sun all closed.
