I am ok with mugging. But excessive mugging such that it become a culture is disconcerting. I am certainly for culture of innovation or creativity but culture of mugging???
mugging' is another word for studying and 'mugger' is to describe a very studious person.
Nice words to use- to study consistently in JC which is less than 2 yrs span then its A level.
JC is the toughest hurdle, then in Uni can relax more as its not so paper n pen kind exams.
Bad choice of words used by parents/students jealous of Nyjc and to scare potential students applying Nyjc- mugging.
There is definitely a balanced JC Nyjc life- with many allocated Ny college events to participate/chill on from Nyjc Calendar events.
Its how students manage time.
Nyjc has a conducive study campus- campus is opened on weekends for students.
Ny students love to study inside college with peers, chill at Nex for a decent meal/nearby popular coffeeshop, then back in campus to continue study or CCAs.
Its a healthy motivation amongst the Ny students, rallying one another to study consistently.
They study openly, no closet where other JC kids go back to mug or study at home.
Which JCs you go dont need you to study or mug regularly, pls. Unless you want bad rp.
President scholars?
Is your DC a scholar in the first place?
Same old topic keeps dwelling about President scholars😁
As to President scholars , they are assessed on all fronts to ascertain that they are all rounders, possessing unique abilities that stand out from the mass cohort.
I am asking this question as it will give me insights on how NYJC trains its students. Overly skewed towards academics is not necessarily a bonus. I have interviewed candidates with stellar academic results in interviews but they failed miserably in articulation.
FYI even VJC NJC ACJC etc all have produced President scholars. Wouldnt NYJC produce any in her alnost 50 years of history? -
Nothing wrong for students to study hard, esp for A levels. The best get to pick their choice course and get scholarship.
Better that everyone in sch works hard together, all learn together and help each other, than some skeletons mugger culture. -

Do you have any figures of PSC scolarships attained by NYJC?

FYI, there are so many students getting PSC scholarships every year in RI that they have a dedicated PSC desk in campus. RI students study hard too but whats in RI students and culture that makes them stand out against others? Have you ever thought about it? -

Mugging is interpreted differently by many.
Someone said as long its study together, not closet mugger like in other JCs, nothing wrong.
Whats excessing to you.
In Nyjc, it isnt no life.
We can see Nyjc students happy.
Happy students = good results. Thats 1 for good formula.
I dont understand why you love to dwell on
PSC scolarships just like....
Your DC isnt from NYJC.
Dont need to choose NYJC for your future DC/D grandchildren.
Is yr DC a scholar, my question. -

Its ok, send your DC to RI if yr DC age still eligible to study A level😁.

You should Go and worry about those other 'play hard study hard' JCs.
Dont waste time on Nyjc. -
These are the 3 typical objectives for students:
1) good academic results
2) happiness
3) scholarship
Ideally, to achieve all 3. If can’t, I would prioritise 2) and 1).
After in comfortable position for 2 and 1, if have spare capacities , then work towards 3.
Step by step.
I think NYJC has achieved something many JCs can’t. It’s an achievement worth studying. Not to forget they are not IP students to begin with. -

I thk to be fair to NYJC, for years, its name is obscure behind RI, HCI and VJC (when VJ's performace is still ahead of NYJC).
Is that the way your JC taught you how to respond to comments and objections? You would certainly fail my interview.
To answer your question. My DD was never in NYJC as she is not the mugger toad type. Howerver she was a President Award Girl guide and also a PSC scholar
I understand that there isn't any department allocated to scholarship, let alone President or PSC scholarship but just a ESG Councillor to advise and answer questions. Even until today when I look at the briefing slides last week.
But I thk the new principal Mr Pang is making some changes. You can refer to the link below for reference. This is a good start and hopefully he can set up a scholarship department as well if the number of eligible students are on the rise.

I have no vested interest in speaking up for this JC, no children in any JC or tertiary yet.
Numbers branded /scholarships has nothing to do with individuals, is only for school reporting performance. Even if a student enter RI, it doesn’t mean he will get the perks if his results are not showing. Not everyone in RI gets to enjoy these attention and perks. There are certain distinctive qualities to be in this group. Parents should know their children enough which sch/culture is what they need to optimise their chances to fulfil their potential. Yes, if the child is really outstanding, he should not miss the opportunity to make best use of R or H, brand and resources. -

You should have known that I have not posted for a long time as all my children has passed the JC phase. But I was perturbed to read that many are praising a culture of mugging as a sign of excellence, and that prompted my original post.

If a culture of mugging leads to excellence, then why have NYJC never produced a President scholar in its 50 years of existence?. I am not talking about comparison to RI or HCI or even VJC. How about NJC, TJC and ACJC which had all produced President scholars. It does not correlate, right ? So what is in the culture of these school that is different ?
Note that I am not against mugging, but extreme excessive mugging. The corporate world do not need workers today that are only able to memorize and regurgitate facts and lacking in all other departments. -
Anyone know, is it the case there are many PSC scholarship applicants from NYJC but none got it? Or there is relatively very low number of PSC scholarship applicants from NYJC?
