I remember back in the good days when everyone had to go to Winstedt Road, we started off in Sec 1 with 8 Japanese language classes. By O levels, there was one class left. By AO levels, we were left with around a dozen students, with no more than 2 or 3 from any particular JC.
30% sounds like an improvement.
And after 6 years, I still catch no ball what anybody was saying in any Japanese show or cartoon.

Haha, you sound like those kids whose parents sent for Chinese tuition, yet still catch no ball / can’t communicate in proper chinese sentences. -

Yes, when I signed up DD for L3, the thought of sending her to a non-English speaking country Uni did not cross my mind.
Also, for clarity I am not saying one should seek out Third Lang so these other options are open. Instead, I think the kids that naturally make it that far happen to end up with some interesting options.
It is the same as learning Home Econs lessons. not aiming to be a Michelin-starred chef, but rather it indirectly taught our kids not to be afraid to venture into the kitchen to cook something, it’s a life skill.
In the ST article, Mr Hannan Hazlan shared that he wanted to go Germany but not sure how tough is learning German. Many of us know the Uni is free (or cheap) for Germany/Japan/France but had more students being exposed to L3, even for just a 1yr, maybe useful in encouraging more to explore a path less travelled -

My Chinese was CL1 one. It was usable, but cannot write or recite poetry. It improved in JC. No more CL classes. I started reading 金庸武侠小说.
It's my L3 that catch no ball. I did however learn that Japanese kanji pronunciation is closest to Hokkien or 闽南语. -

With NTU and NUS ranked so high, there is little or no motivation for parents / kids to study overseas, even if there is scholarship and a job thereafter - this is what I gathered from conversations with friends and their kids.

Nowadays hardly hear anyone going overseas for Accountancy, unlike decades ago. Among my friends’ kids who studied overseas, mostly went overseas for studies in Law and Med.
Oh btw, NTU ranking is rising fast and furious but when I look at the salary.com report, out of TOP 20 earners, 18 spots went to NUS and SMU grads, only 2 went to NTU grads. If given the chance to study in both, wonder which should one pick, SMU or NTU. Hmmmm..

DS accepted NUS though I would prefer him to go to SMU. Reason for our preference is personality fit - he is more introverted, while I would like him to develop a wider comfort zone.

Studying overseas is stressful too - highly competitive as everybody is aiming for First Class with Recommendation or to be the top student. Majority continued with post-graduate studies. -

My elder child's experience - nearly none of his friends are keen to study overseas. Several reasons - many of the US and UK universities have or are in the midst of releasing admission results - many were surprised that they didn't receive the offers they had hoped for. Secondly, many are comfortable staying in local universities, and prefer the flexibility of not taking up a bonded scholarship for overseas studies. Thirdly, studying in Singapore is simply the path of least resistance, as in, least uncomfortable path. Studying overseas always entails some level of missing the comforts and convenience of home.
