DS accepted NUS though I would prefer him to go to SMU. Reason for our preference is personality fit - he is more introverted, while I would like him to develop a wider comfort zone.
My children will tell me staying overseas because Singapore is soooo small, so stressful, it’s for the experience, for the exposure etc. lol.
In the ST article, one shared that he was fascinated with cars so he would like to work for BMW or Volkswagen after graduating from Germany.
Nowadays hardly hear anyone going overseas for Accountancy, unlike decades ago. Among my friends’ kids who studied overseas, mostly went overseas for studies in Law and Med.
Oh btw, NTU ranking is rising fast and furious but when I look at the salary.com report, out of TOP 20 earners, 18 spots went to NUS and SMU grads, only 2 went to NTU grads. If given the chance to study in both, wonder which should one pick, SMU or NTU. Hmmmm..

Studying overseas is stressful too - highly competitive as everybody is aiming for First Class with Recommendation or to be the top student. Majority continued with post-graduate studies. -

My elder child's experience - nearly none of his friends are keen to study overseas. Several reasons - many of the US and UK universities have or are in the midst of releasing admission results - many were surprised that they didn't receive the offers they had hoped for. Secondly, many are comfortable staying in local universities, and prefer the flexibility of not taking up a bonded scholarship for overseas studies. Thirdly, studying in Singapore is simply the path of least resistance, as in, least uncomfortable path. Studying overseas always entails some level of missing the comforts and convenience of home.
With NTU and NUS ranked so high, there is little or no motivation for parents / kids to study overseas, even if there is scholarship and a job thereafter - this is what I gathered from conversations with friends and their kids.
Even my DS also will not entertain me about studying overseas and quickly sealed his offer before I come home from work.

My ex colleague trying to sell me that studying in US has one thing not found (or not as entrenched) in local Unis , is that US Uni system more likely to produce original/independent thinkers. When student give an answer, the teaching staff will ask for the reasoning behind the answers. They value students’ reasoning too, not only solely “correct answers”. I am sold, so far only with this reason, to choose US over local Unis

Spoken to Fren whose dd is in final yr in NUS , is content / theory focused - since my time n hubby time had been so. If your ds wishes n interest into pursue deep content knowledge, probably is rather suitable , useful n beneficial for pursuit of further education in future too. My ds is opposite , so we think smu suits him better, we will know when he starts

Am not sure if it is interest, think it is more being strategic viz ability / personality. The good thing is there is still 2 more years to observe his personal growth, based on which he may be confident enough to go overseas.
My preference is still for him to spend some years overseas as there are a lot more opportunities there. But will respect his choice and decision. -
Recently I watch a YouTube video posted by a Chinese American of HK descendant. She studied in US Uni and went to UK on a 1 year exchange program. She shared she felt safer taking to strangers met on the street in UK than in US.
Any parents can share what you know about differences of living experiences of students study in foreign countries. Both the relative positives and negatives, among the foreign countries -
