Teaching Chinese at Home

tamarind:
really? when i read it I keep seeing a 鱼圆 flash across my mind heh heh.
I think that is her daughter's real nametoddles:
It's so cute that she calls her daughter 圆圆. I think my daughter would flip in her teenage years if I called her that in a book! haha.
, not a baby name ?
I know a famous China actress named 圆圆.
Glad that you like the book. Yes it is not just a book to teach mandarin, it is about how she raised her daughter from baby to university level. She is writing about her real life experiences, which any mother can relate to.
whilst i think she probably did a great job with her daughter, I think sometimes the child's personality is a factor too. Her dd is naturally good natured to begin with... some kids I meet, they are just a totally different kettle of fish. and different techniques might be required. -

I totally agreemummy of 2:
Before sending my p1 ds to chinese creative writing class, i thought of trying to teach him myself at home. Anyone can share their experiences or can recommend any books that can help me get started?
According to 好妈妈胜过好老师, the basis for creative writing is reading. Without reading as the foundation, all other techniques you learn are just small tactics. Hope this helps.
When I was in secondary school, I used to write very good essays effortlessly, and I enjoyed writing in Chinese very much. I never attended any enrichment classes, all thanks to reading as many Chinese novels that I can find.
For P1, I suggest that kids write 2 to 3 simple sentences of what they have done everyday. Once they can write sentences effortlessly, they will write whenever they are inspired. At this age, it is best to focus on reading. A child cannot write well unless he can read Chinese books with over 200 words a page fluently.
There is a section in the book 好妈妈胜过好老师, that says that when a child writes about his real life experiences, it is when he writes best.
thanks for both of your reply. Indeed to able to write must have the ability to read and converse. So far my ds is doing chinese reading (w/o hanyu pin yin)daily, i can see him improving.
Tamarind, thanks for suggesting, i think i can start him with writing a few sentence daily in his diary. -
Hi tamarind, I have read the 好妈妈胜过好老师 and like one of this parts: 不陪”才能培养好习惯
Therefore, when DD was back after the supplementary class at 4pm yesterday and wanted to do some other thing instead of doing homework or read a story book, I let her plan herself instead of asking/remind her the school work. She then chose to make a dress for her Barbie doll. I commended her creativity and took a photo for it. DD was very happy and done her school work and Science MCQ (from me) extremely fast than usual. After that she took a bath and enjoying her dinner with a story book and get ready for the 8pm show 食在好源 头and went to bed after the 9pm new CL show. We both were happy and I learnt to be patient, not to 一着急就替孩子做决定.
Thank you for recommend such a wonderful book.

Do start cos you won't be able to stop once you get started
It's written in a very engaging and easy to understand manner.
This book follows me everywhere I go every day, so that I can read it whenever I have some free time in between.

I called my DD 圆圆 too when she was younger (not real name though, just sounds like).

By the way, which email address do you send your query to? Is it at 帮助, and 联系客服? I have sent twice but so far no reply. I even called them up once, but unfortunately, I didn't have my credit card number with me at that time and they insisted that they can't check anything with regard to my order unless I could give them the first and last 4 digits of my credit card :x . So inflexible!
