I just bought a bottle of manuka honey UMF12+ for my kids. Just wandering whether UMF12+ is suitable for my kids at age of 8 and 12? Also, I've heard that metal and plastic spoon cannot be used to scoop the honey but only ceramic spoon, is it true? Thanks.

From what I know, only metal spoon not advisable to be used. I use plastic or ceramic spoon.

I give my kids 6 and 10 a teaspoon of UMF 15. UMF 12 should be fine.
Didn't get UMF 20 as it is too strong as we take it almost daily. Maybe next round will get UMF 10 since we take it as prevention/maintenance.

Wah good information on Manuka honey! We have been taking this ever since one friend came from NZ and gave us 2 bottles (the label is blue in colour). Subsequently realized how expensive it is from NTUC! DH bought cheaper Manuka honey as substitute but after reading this thread, I am going to check out the UMF and the level on the bottles to see what we have been taking so far. Didn't know got so many health benefits. Will definitely invest for my DS going forward! Will try UMF 5 or 10. Must also remember not to use metal spoon!

Yesterday I went to Jurong Point to get my Manuka honey so was passing the way before I reached the NTUC and saw the Yummi Honey, so thought of asking the sales person there if he has Manuka Honey... wat he told me caught quite off-gaurd so I need ppl here who have similar experience.....


He showed me bottle of Manuka Honey and put it upside down it was quite watery!! and then he showed me with Yummi honey it wasnt so much watery...then he made us taste both the honey.. the Manuka honey was sweeter than the Yummi honey so he told me its cause they mix sweetner to it and thats the reason it has a expiry date :!:
He said honey is the only food which doesnt expire in reality and cause they mix all kinda stuff in those tradional honey they have a expiry date...

He said Yummi honey doesnt have the expiry date... though he said we should always use plastic or best is use wooden spoon to scoop out the honey and shouldnt use hot water though for slimming we can use lukewarm water and shouldnt mix lemon in to it but should put the slices of lemon inside and just stir!!

No need to tell the honey was quite expensive.. but made me think bout the expiry date thing... can anyone suggest about it?

I buy HNZ brand as it has a certificate of originality and no ingredients put in. Using metal spoon will cause the manuka to lose its effectiveness. Also bcos manuka doesn't need to be put in the fridge, it will spoil the manuka if hot water is used to dissolve it.

BTW, I've finished 2 bottles of UMF 15 already.

It depends on what kind of manuka honey that guy showed you. There are many types of honey being sold as manuka honey. But the ones that the contributors of this thread had been talking about are the UMF type. These are the ones with the active bacteria. It is true what the guy has said, honey does not have an expiry date. If you store it in a cool dark place, the honey will age and eventually turn darker but it will not go bad. I am one who believes in the healing properties of honey and I have tried many types. But the one that I see effectiveness is manuka honey. Seriously, when I feel a sore throat coming, other types of honey, even pi pa gao does not work as effectively as Manuka.

The Manuka honey that I get is not watery or runny at all. It is actually quite thick and is not clear but rather opaque. They range from creamy to a dark gold brown colour depending on the batch. Even though there is an expiry date on every bottle, mine has never gone bad. And it does not settle, as in you do not see a separate layer of granules settling at the bottom of the bottle. Well to be fair, these days, my honey does not have a chance to reach that state. But I gave a bottle to my dad 3yrs ago for his acid reflux problem and he still has it. Still ok.

I hate it when sales people put down another product in order to sell their product. If your product is truly of high quality, there is no need to put another product down. In my eyes, by doing so, you are only telling me you have no confidence in your own product.

I will be in JP tomorrow, maybe I will purposely go and see what they have to say.

I agree with Funz about the texture and colour of the honey.

The one I am using is UMF 15+, made in New Zealand. The brand is Comvita, 250g and costs $40.70. I bough it from a medical hall and since its was my first time, I didn’t shop ard to compare prices.

It is not about the bees but more the plants that the bees gather the nectar and pollen from.

The Manuka plant is indegenous to NZ and and some parts of Australia. NZ remains the larger producer and exporter of Manuka honey but Australia does produce some as well.

You will see some US brand Manuka Honey but they import from NZ and put their own brand on it.

The other product that I will recommend is the Manuka propolis spray, wonderful for sore throats and ulcers as well. But must test for allergies first as these contain pollens.

Is it because it does not have healing effect?
