Sorry to butt in. I was looking for a piano earlier and I spoke to a few piano teachers. All agreed that the Yamaha has lighter keys and Kawai has heavier keys and that Almost all prefer Kawai to the Yamaha due to the sound. There are 3 senior teachers that I spoke to that swears by Kawai because of its sound and their heavy keys - citing reasons as better training for the hands movement and strength and feel.

But i guess its still up to individual taste and likes. There's no right or wrong in this case.

I hope you get something you like!
Thanks for the information! May be that's why my gal's teacher suggested Yamaha. She said my gal is ok with the hands movement and strength but not 'expressive' enough, thus a lighter piano is better suit for her.

She is in P4 now, 10yo already. She will only complete her grade 8 next July (hopefully....), so officially she cannot consider a grade 8-der yet....heehee.

By the way, I have no idea about music or piano, it is complusory to have a piano with the sostenuto pedal for diploma exam?

Maybe used to be true for older kawai piano models. Seem less obvious now. Hubby tested the new showroom pieces, kawai K3 K5 versus yamaha U1 U3, not much difference.

kawai new models keys are no longer that heavy. Heard from salesman that kawai lost many young learners to yamaha due to its heavier keys, so they actually made it lighter nowsaday.
For yamaha, they know it's a common critism of their light keys so they made it heavier nowsaday. Hence, difference not as substantial as before

Kawai sounds better according to hubby. My dd prefers yamaha keys. She said easier to play. So I guess there's still subtle difference in terms of touch, only young kids can notice. For me, either is fine as long as price tag is fine

Is your dd with Nafa? Or private teacher?

Completing grade 8 at 11yo is a great achievement. Impressive !

              Hi Sleepy,

Thank you for your sharing. My gal is a privite student.

We have tried both piano over the last 2 days, my gal said she preferred the K8 sound but the feel for the YUS5 is better. She doesn't mind either one.

We are going to get the YUS5, it fits my budget better. :moneyflies:

Thanks again daisyt, tree nymph and sleepy!

Hi there, I need help. I am clueless about pianos. My 6yo daughter wishes to learn the piano. Her teacher suggested she buys the Bohemia 121. Many on forums I have read, seem to swear by either Yamaha or Kawai. What do you think is a better piano K3 ($7,790) or U1 ($8,600). Is having the silent piano option recommendable K3 ($10,490) or U1 ($9,800).

I hope someone could held shed some light.

                        Thank you.
