No grouping going on for Primary 1.
Verbally, there is no grouping. Aft the test the kids will be in different class from the one the went for orientation.

My son's sch didnt conduct and test though it is a SAP sch.

My friends' kids (neighbourhood sch) failed the test. 2 different kids from 2 different class during the orientation, now they are classmate in the same class. The smarter ones will be grouped together.

I find that this is still a form of grouping.

Anyway, all sch are different. How to compare and say, there is no ending to this. MOE always change it rules and regulations.

So long we keep an eye on our kid that he is on the right track.

      Smile!!!!!!!!

I've 2 other friends in the same school, same thing happened to their kids. They stays in the same class which was allocated way before the test. One of the kid attending the LSP currently.

You are right that nothing can be compared afterall they are in a different school.

          KS_me,

To me, grouping or not doesnt matter. So long our kids enjoy school and can cope with the subjects.

          Relax!!!!!!

          Cheers!!!!! :celebrate:

I have heard that some kids did not even attend K1/K2 before going to P1. So I think the screening test is to let the school know who need more attention.

I know there are schools that conduct 1-2 weeks short course in Dec for new P1 students who need some kind of "readiness course" before the term starts.

In general, this screening test is to filter those students who need extra so that the school can give them more attention. Not so much of grouping the good ones together (that’s my opinion).

hi, my son is in a neighbourhood school. Last year, I did call the school to ask if the kids will be tested and grouped. The teacher mentioned, there’s an assessment but the classes will not be grouped by such results. The purpose is to find out those who need more help. And accordingly to the previous years, the questions are something like rearrange words and write out the spelling of the numbers, etc.

Last yr, during the orientation, the kids were led to the classrooms by groups (class not yet allocated) and they were so call tested. My son told me for maths is something like ___ and 6 makes 10, such kind. After 2-3 wks, we were notified of their class allocation. hence I doubt the school did not ‘classify’ the kids according to their results.

When the school starts, in few weeks later, I heard some kids were being transfered from 1 class to another, I suspect they are trying to group the kids of the similar ability so that they can cater a better teaching methods to help the kids.

              Maybe different school practise differently.

My daughter is in a neighbourhood school. I compare her spelling list with my friend’s son who is in a SAP school. Both schools are using the stellar program for English and so the topics teach are the same, but my daughter spelling’s words are so much easier compare to my friend’s son one. My daughter spelling’s list are all in one word wherelse my friend’s son one is in sentence form. There is definitely a double standard in terms of teaching wise.

my son’s neighbourhood school give spellings that includes single words, double words and sentences each time, starting from the first spelling. I had a shock when i saw the list. Now term 2, their list for the terms are slowly doing out single words and becoming double then triple words, in few weeks to come. But sentences (min 2) are definitely included. They are having Stellar Prog for english also.

Heard from one of my friend, her girl in another neighbourhood school having not simple spelling as well. Alternate week, they will have sentences for spellings. Actually how the schools managed are based on their individual, as long as they are within the MOE guideline.

there is actually good and bad for children who have easier spelling list. The good is they are not so stress compare to others, but bad thing is same level, but others are learning much more difficult words. So you want your child not to be so stress or learn more difficult words.. Very difficult to decide :?

                      Hi All,

Actually, I feel that learning difficult words is good for a child in the long run. For my case, my child is having STELLAR program in neighbourhood sch and I find that the teacher still give simple one-word spelling for them to learn even though they are in the top class. I could see from my friend’s son that he is learning spelling in the form of passages.

You are right, learning more is better and benefit the kid in the future. I think all the P1 in Spore is learning through Stellar. Maybe I am wrong...
My school (SAP), is giving only key words for spelling.

Tough in intial stage, easy in later stage.
