i dont add any vinegar to the rice, i usually mix sesame seeds with tuna flakes and shaped into triangle shape or put some other ingredient eg mayo egg or tuna into the centre of the rice ball. There's even commercially ready-packed seasoning call furikake, i usually get it from the japanese section in supermarket.
It all depends if you are a fast worker or not. I usually spent about 30-40 min every morning to prepare breakfast, recess and lunch for my girls.
It will be helpful if your rice cooker has a timer. It gets the rice ready when you wake up and all you need is to add sushi vinegar to the rice, stir thoroughly, cooled, than shaped and wrapped.
For a more professional look, buy the ready wrapper with seaweed inserted. Instructions on how to wrap a triangular onigiri is on the wrapper itself. Hygienic and seaweed remains crisp when eating.
After rice are cooked, i usualy tk about 15 min to shape the rice for my ds lunch box. -
Hi,
My kid have to bring lunch to eat @ school. He doesnt’ like sandwice @ all because is too dry. Any mommies prepare rice for your kids to bring to
school and can share how to prepare and most importantly put in what
kind of container? His lunchtime is 1230 and worries that by then the
food will turn rotten.
cheers,
worried mom -
The easiest is fried rice. The most important part is to let it cool to room temperature before you cover the container. This way there will not be condensation which hasten food spoilage.
I don’t like soft plastic container that leaves a strong smell. I prefer hard plastic containers that are air-tight. Metal containers may be very noisy in the bag.
The E-Zlock double containers are great for small portions of different dishes. I bought the small one that is divided into two smaller compartments all the way to the cover so it won’t leak into each other. You can pack rice in a container that will be a convenient plate, and use the E-Zlock divided container for meat and veg.
You said he doesn’t like sandwiches becuase it’s too dry. You can actually separate fillings from bread, or put the mayo/dressing separately. He adds it just before he eats. For rice, if you don’t want to do fried rice too often, you can add some sesame oil or flaxseed oil to the rice so that it’s not so dry.
Remember to put everything in a separate plastic bag before putting into the bag in case anything leaks. -
I use thermal wares with 3 different containers. It keeps the food warm for 4-6 hours or longer. It is quite heavy to carry though.
I usually have fruits, rice and normal dishes eg. Braised Pork, Steamed Salmon, Unagi, anything that you would prepare for lunch/dinner. All dishes will include vegs eg. carrots, broccoli, cauliflower etc…as colouful as possible.
I sometimes exchange fruits for soup. -
There’s many ways
i think the important thing is who’s carry the food. If you send him to school n pick him up, a thermal food jar is best, as it is kept warm and u can have side dishes separate. There are smaller sized ones which are lighter, I saw them at BHG.
If your child has to carry it by themselves, n u r worried about the weight. Use lock & lock? it’s very important to cool down the rice first. I usually have a fan in the kitchen to speed things up. cool before u pack as the condensation encourages bacteria. don pack it with gravy too… one more method is to add sushi vinegar to the rice. That helps to prevent bacteria too. I like to add stuff like strips of omelette, vege, crabstick and prawns on the sushi rice, like a chirashi bowl! make sure all food are cooled to room temp before packing!
share 1 more trick with u, to keep vege fr turning yellow. Boil water, blanch the vege, don over cook. Take it out and rinse with cool water until no longer hot. strain and Squeeze out the water from the vege, add sesame oil and seasoning like soy sauce, salt. all done! the vege will stay green until u eat.
U can check out those bento websites like lunchinabox.net for tips on keeping food fresh for lunch. -
You can try rice burger for a change, something like mos burger.
Instead of burger bun, i used cooked short grain rice, cooked with abit more water so rice its stickier and easier to shape. For shaping the rice into half of a bun, i used a chinese ricebowl as a mould, filled it with a quarter of the rice and press down with a fork then turn it over. Repeat 2x to make a whole rice burger bun.
For the filling, you can use ready or home made meat patties, grill chicken or salmon, top it with lettuce, tomatoes n mayo. you can separate the veg when packing. Also to sprinkle some black sesame onto the rice bun.
For even easier recipe, try japanese rice ball, onigiri. -

Next year will have a headache packing for recess as I will have to prepare for 2...daughter will be in P1. Sometimes biscuit or else sandwich or boiled egg...lotus bun or char siew pau. -
Some ideas here:
1. sandwiches (can put in different ingredients - ham, cheese, tuna spread, salmon spread, fried egg, luncheon meat, sausages, cucumber, etc.)
2. biscuits or japanese rice crackers
3. cake
4. pau or siew mai
5. bread and buns
6. fried noodles, bee hoon, kway teow, bi tai mak, fried rice
7. carrot cake, chee cheong fun, pumpkin cake, yam cake
8. nonya kueh
9. dumpling, lor mai kai, glutinous rice (not too much or very full and indigestion)
10. baked potato (with mayo and ham and cheese), or french fries or fried potato with fish finger or sausages or fake scallop
Drinks you can just give water but maybe once / twice a week have a treat of fruit juice or milo. Can also keep some small treats like a pack of seaweed or raisins or gummy bears now and then.
Hope this helps.
