:? Hi Hi, I am very new to this forum, can tell me more abt DSL? My hubby wanted to enroll my son in this sch..and i learn that that standard had drop, is that true? which sch shall i let my son go... untiy or DSL????

My girl in P1 now, she enjoys going to DLS.

How can the standard drop when the school's expectations from the kids are high?

If the kids are are not so academically inclined, DLS's standard may be too high.

Especially the Maths, I felt some of the questions can be quite challenging for P1 standard - needs critical thinking skills, not so straight forward for their level. Many problem solving questions.

I shared with my friends who kids are in other school in cck, she said those types of questions only tested in P2 2nd semester. My friends' kids in school in Woodlands also don't do such challenging questions. My niece in P2 at a school in Yishun also don't get such challenging questions.

Level of English must be good in order to understand those Maths questions. It's a testing of thinking skill & English. I was quite shocked the first time I saw such questions. Now, I'm getting use to it.

      Sample question:
John is 3 years younger than his sister.
His sister will be 15 years old in 6 years time.
      How old is John now?

      star + circle + moon= 19
      circle + moon =12
      star = circle
      What is moon?

Of course not all the questions are challenging, there will always be a few such questions to stretch them further. Think positively, it is good for them.

The school also expects a lot from them in English. Now in Stellar programme, no English textbook, using Big Book programme. Learn English through Story. It's fun during lessons but not so \"fun\" when it's exam.
They are expected to write 60 words for Picture Composition in SA1. Many schools don't have such requirements in SA1, in fact, some do away with SA1.

For English & MT, P1 students are expected to do project work & there's also \"Show & Tell\". \"Show & Tell\" is challenging for my girl 'cos she is very shy & lack of confident in public speaking.

For MT, they will start streaming at the beginning of the year. After SA1, they will stream again based on their results. The school will do a survey first to understand more about our kids and their level of language.

What's good about the school is that they will conduct briefing/dialogue session, parents/teacher meeting but need to take leave...

Then, they have e-learning day, kids don't have to go to school and we have to take leave again to help them with their e-learning lessons.

It's a learning process for me as I don't know about these expectations from the school previously. BTW, they need to practise typing skills on-line but not to worry, only occasionally.

Though DLS doesn't seem to produce Top PSLE students but the standard is definitely not low. The standard is higher than national average.

The Lasallian leaders (prefects) are well-mannered, also many helpful parent volunteers are around during events, parents/teaching meeting. They are there to lead us to the venue.

Basically I felt it is a good school but must have luck to get in if you are not a catholic 'cos they don't accept PV.

Good luck to those who want to register.

very well said. I will not blame the school abt the standard, i will only blame myself and my son, how come we cannot achieve the school's standard, or it could be my son who make the standard drops. πŸ˜›

We are not expecting our kids to be top PSLE students, as long as they enjoy going to school, have good moral values, that is more important. I'm sure DLS produces many good lasallians.

          unknown:

:? trouble don't know which sch to chose: untiy is near my block, Yew Tee need to take bus De La Salle also need to take bus. i perfer dls not my hubby, he's told me that dls got a lot of homework is that true??

hihi unknown....u were like us last year when we mommies were trying very hard to figure which school would be the best for our ds/dd.....

dls basically has an 'ok' sum of hw....meaning; there are days when they hv more hw than others; but i think its manageable..... its not like there are huge mountains of hw everyday so dun worry......

i gather u shld be staying near me where unity is just opp my block, YT & DLS need to take bus.... do weigh the pros & cons of each school be4 applying for any of the above..... like distance, convenience, $$ to spend on transport, school standard, cca, etc..... now tat my ds got into dls & he has to attend the chinese S&D in school this week, i only can depend on my maid to help me ferry him up & down....so think about also convenience when putting yr ds/dd in any school esp if u hv no help and only depend on maid..... when they get older, they hv CCAs, supp, and activities out of school hour which the school bus wld not pick/drop them off....

Oooo ...Yes untiy is just across my block, btw why do u chose DSL? is this Sch much batter than untiy n YT? i learnt that the stardard is no longer as good as in the past, is that true??

standard??? i never thought of that when I registered ds.
All 3 schools, Unity, YT & DLS r within 1km from my home so I hv basically a fair chance for all.... except Unity coz the no. of places left for 2C was really less than both YT & DLS....for YT, not so convenient in my sense, so DLS was the best choice.

I cannot understand why ppl keep saying DLS's standard has dropped...
              I see my ds's Maths paper, I call for help :?: !!!
star2003 has said all that I want to say for u to decide whether DLS's standard has dropped...I don't wish to repeat it but for sure DLS's standard is definitely one of the higher ones.....

And PSLE is not the only gauge of whether a school is a good school or not. It comes from the child.... πŸ˜‰
