Seriously, I am glad to hear u say it is not easy for the SAHM to apply as a PV. My time has not come yet. So far I read in somewhere in this forum that some mummies commented that there may be preferential selection towards SAHM wor. So that makes me worried when I read that... ๐Ÿ˜ข

Not really in selection of PV I find cos I am a FTWM but get selected. Just have to stress that you're willing to take annual lve, child care leave, etc etc. Sometimes in granting assignments SAHM has the advantage cos SAHM are more flexible in their timing (eg can do am/pm session traffice warden duties, wkly library duties) while FTWM has to subject to leave clearance.

The sch I PV-ed at approached me to complete last few hrs of my PV by doing 1 mth of morning traffic warden (0.5hrs each time). Quite diff cos I have to send my kids to CC & then to work. They changed my duty to a few batch of 4hrs duties so I need to take a few 1/2 days leave.

I disagree about SAHM being 'easier' to apply for PV. I applied for a sch 2 yrs ago (2008). My son's in K2 this year. They told me I'm in waiting list! In the registration form, I 'ticked' all columns as in I'm able to volunteer in all departments any time of the week. I just heard a few weeks ago that another SAHM applied in 2009. She's able to get in? I really pray that my son will get into another sch so that I don't have to rely on this 'biased' sch as I'm living within 1km of this 'biased' sch... if they're so 'biased' on PV stuff.. what about my son's EDU?

        FRUIT FOR THOUGHT

maybe that SAHM was working in a certain industry before she became a SAHM and thus has a set of skills the school requires (eg computer programming).. or maybe she has a special skill like dancing or something which the school requires...

        The possibilities can be many..

I am a FTWM and I was also accepted for PV. Yes, that means annual leave, childcare leave, weekends etc etcโ€ฆ

FTWM and SAHM alike - donโ€™t give up. Just give it your best shot.

The trick that I learnt from KSP is to cast your net as wide as possible - pretty much like sending our application letter for a job. Apply to a few then see which one you get accepted forโ€ฆ

)? Somehow I don't see it is working very well as the nation progress..I also worry for my kids when they are due for P1 registration in a few years time.

Don't think being a parent of Ethiopia is good suggestion - it is like comparing an apple and an orange...entirely 2 different fruits.
Ok, what would you propose to be a better solution? I had suggested that we do away with PV altogether, but there will be a bunch of naysayers to that to.

Ethiopia is an entirely relevant comparator, as is Malaysia, or the Phillipines, or China, or the UK. In which of those countries would you prefer to be a parent raising children, compared to Singapore?

My view again, parenting in general is a difficult endeavour, but parenting in Singapore is dead easy, compared to many other countries.

Hmmm..I would not do away with PV but rather I hope MOE will recognise the efforts being a PV in school so maybe phase2B1 for PV phase 2B2 for clans/church/grassroot. Hahahaaa...that's my wish list which may be equal to fat hope.

I don't really mean parenting in different countries but more of the education we want our kids to have in Singapore I guess.. Parenting in terms of education thinking of which 'ideal' school to put the child in. Of course parents don't have to worry about the schools in Ethopia cos they have more urgent priority which is to fill up their stomachs but it is really a different environment to discuss...which is why I say it is an orange and apple comparison. Naturally when a country get more developed, standards will be higher and hence expectations are raised as well..Singapore is a small island with limited human resource. Hence in this human rat race, almost all the parents is given the impresession that education is the key to a good future....so many parents start to invest kids to enrichment classes, reading material etc etc..all in the hopes that their kids have good/advanced start in education.

                    i hope not.
clans and churches affiliations go back a long way.
grassroots involvement benefits the society as a whole.
PV? it benefits and school only and the PV-parent/child.

                      Meeyah,

                      2B1 for PVs, 2B2 for church/clan/grassroots ๐Ÿ˜
I think parents are in favour of this new sub-category but NOT MOE.
This will mean further breakdown of vacancies which I think MOE is not in favour of.
Under MOE rules & regulations, Phase 2B is for PV/church/clan/grassroot leader. PV selections are done by the schools. Selection of PV is also done by the schools, including the hours (40 or 80) to serve. Selection criteria is also something we don't know.
Easiest way for MOE is of course to lump all these parents together but rather unfair for PVs who actually take time out to serve the school. Bottom line is, it's getting tough now to be a parent. Agree ?

When applying for PV (many years ago), I didn't sense any preference SAHMs over FTWMs. However, school expected PVs to commit 1 - 2 hours every week on a weekday afternoon. This may be a stretch for working parents unless their companies are flexible

One tip, it may be useful to attach your BIG BIG certifcates. Majority of PVs I spoke to have degrees, Masters degrees, double Masters, one even with PHD ! Perhaps the principal's selection logic was parents can study, children also can study? ๐Ÿ˜

please don't ask me which school
