Hmmm..I would not do away with PV but rather I hope MOE will recognise the efforts being a PV in school so maybe phase2B1 for PV phase 2B2 for clans/church/grassroot. Hahahaaa...that's my wish list which may be equal to fat hope.

as you see, you can never have one policy that satisfies all parties. Point being, this can hardly be the fault of the gahmen, can it? As long as there are popular schools, there will be competition. As long as there is competition, there will be winners and there will be losers. It is the natural order of things and no amount of policy tweaking by MOE will ever get us away from that. As long as MOE provides the substrate of accessibility to a decent level of education as the base case, it has done its job, everything else is gravy. Expectations for even 'higher' levels of gratification is down to the individual and how much pain he/she is willing to endure to attain it.

2 slips for Singaporeans. If the PR gets in on one slip, (no offence to PRs) , then he/she is really lucky. Anyway, expect to see tis in the newspapers tomorrow. I'm sure our PM is following the news too.

I hope that the Singaporean parents who lose out in ballots to PRs will take it in good grace and not agitate.

I don't really mean parenting in different countries but more of the education we want our kids to have in Singapore I guess.. Parenting in terms of education thinking of which 'ideal' school to put the child in. Of course parents don't have to worry about the schools in Ethopia cos they have more urgent priority which is to fill up their stomachs but it is really a different environment to discuss...which is why I say it is an orange and apple comparison. Naturally when a country get more developed, standards will be higher and hence expectations are raised as well..Singapore is a small island with limited human resource. Hence in this human rat race, almost all the parents is given the impresession that education is the key to a good future....so many parents start to invest kids to enrichment classes, reading material etc etc..all in the hopes that their kids have good/advanced start in education.

parents in ALL countries, rich and poor, desire for their children to have a good education. I was in Africa recently and had an opportunity to interact with some locals. These are folk hungry for education and willing to bust a gut to get where they need. Their desire is so strong, and some of them are really smart. What is the quality advantage of Singaporeans over these people? It is ZERO..... In fact, my view of Singaporean students (and their parents) is that we are a bunch of spoilt brats, constantly whining and gazing at our navels. Book smart we may be, but lacking in moral fibre and resilience, constantly harping to the gahmen for help. If we don't wake up to reality soon, we will all be overtaken.

The only advantage we have is a education system and general environment that extracts the best from each individual. I.e. MOE, MOH, MCYS, MOF, MHA have constructed an system that enables us to bring up our children in a safe, healthy and economically stable environment, so that we as parents only really need to think hard on a few dimensions for child development.

if it boils down to that, I think the preference will be 2B1 for church/clan because these are the organisations that started the schools. I see that MOE has tried to maintain any ties parents/associations have with the school by giving priority registration.

I do agree with the other comments that things are as fair as they can be under the circumstance - of course being humans, we will try ways and means to poke and probe and see if there is an 'easy' way out.

It's hard to be a parent in singapore, but certainly I'm glad I'm not a parent in Somalia, Ethiopia...etc etc.

That is not true. Those who are working for MOE will not have any priority or be given special preference. I think the school will prefer to look \"outside the box\". Cos teachers will always think alike and come out with something similar to what the school teachers are doing.

but pretty much a slap in the face for these MOE educators... teaching other ppl's kids... but can't do much for their own...

For a child whose parent or sibling has studied in the school of choice; or whose parent is a staff member of the school of choice.
