Compare RGS vs NYGH

On the contrary, I thought that because of the affiliation, the COP of non-NYPS students will naturally be higher because there are fewer number of places left for students who are not affiliated with NYGH? If not mistaken, the COP of 265 last year was for students not affiliated with the school.
Usually the afflication will lower down the COP of the school? since they give 'discounts' to afflicated gals right?jtoh:
It's probably the first time NYGH has had a higher COP than RGS in a long while. We'll have to see if the trend continues or if it was just a one-off incident. Last year apparently a lot of NYPS girls decided to go to NYGH because their primary school Principal went over to NYGH. This, plus the fact that NYGH's COP for NYPS girls is 250 meant that a quite a number of spaces were taken up by affliation.
So that means there are a good number of gals with very high PSLE scores chose NYGH over RGS.
Actually it does seem to me that NYGH is getting more and more popular.
I would tend to think that if you are from NYPS, NHPS, etc., the preference would be NYGH.
However, if you are from RGPS or other \"less-chinese\" schools, then the preference would be RGS. -

Is this confirmed? :stupid:
Now that it is clear RGS is moving in 2014 to Braddell, the next few years, there would still be an impact due to its new venue... -

Sorry, I beg to differ in your interpretation of 285 vs 283 and that \"top girls are still choosing RGS over NYGH\". This 285 and 283 difference could be due to a single student or it could be due to many students, we are not sure. There are many possible combinations, for example, for RGS it could be one 285 went to RGS and the next best score was 282, and for NYGH it could be three 283 and the next best score was 282... The median helps to clarify the picture. The median for RGS is 266, while NYGH is 268. This means half of the students (of this group, which excludes DSA) in RGS scores 266 and above, and half in NYGH scores 268 and above. Here, it suggests that more students who have a higher score chose NYGH over RGS.
If you look at the highest aggregates, RGS is 285 vs NYGH 283, so the top girls are still choosing RGS over NYGH. Also, this list does not include those who got in via DSA. Most of the top 10 PSLE girls are in RGS.
That said, NY is probably gaining popularity and it'll be interesting to see what happens this year.
But hey, 268 and 266 is also a small difference. What we do agree, I think, is that both schools attract a large number of students with high PSLE scores. So if my DD has this (good) problem next time, I won't worry too much about it

According to jtoh, MOE website provides MEAN, not MEDIAN.
There is a separate COP for affiliation (MOE website). For non-affiliation, NYGH lowest (COP) is 263, highest is 283, and median (half of the pupils) is 268. Compared to RGS lowest is 260, highest is 285 and median is 266. So it does seem that more students with better scores chose NYGH over RGS. As for affiliation, NYGH lowest is 250, highest is 276, and median is 257. So quite a number of high scorers from NYPS also went to NYGH.tree nymph:

Mean = average
Median = the middle number after you put all the aggregates in ascending order
In my opinion, both statistics are not so clear in understanding the trend especially if the mean difference is only 1, 268 versus 267 because the total number of applicants are not equal in both instances. If MOE can provide the MODE statistics instead, then it becomes clearer. MODE gives you the highest number of a certain aggregate, at least the absolute aggregate is taken and not a calculated number like in MEAN. -
jtoh:
This could be due to NYPS getting more and more popular and also producing higher PSLE scores as compared to RGPS? Just speculation. I don't have the numbers to prove it.
That said, NY is probably gaining popularity and it'll be interesting to see what happens this year.

MOE website provides BOTH mean and median. Each statistic provides some information but not others, so even MODE is insufficient to understand the complete picture. Best if MOE gives the frequency distribution chart!!!

even for affiliation, as far as NYGH and NYPS is concerned, the minimum is 250. so affiliation is 250, below 250 - no affiliation
Usually the afflication will lower down the COP of the school? since they give 'discounts' to afflicated gals right?jtoh:

Also, the fact that NYGH accepts students with lower PSLE scores (e.g. those with affiliation) than RGS, and that NYGH/HCI continues to groom, educate and produce excellent students, that must say something about the school and the teachers right? Actually this point was raised by some other KSPs in other threads (I think the St. Nicks vs SCGS/MGS thread, maybe?)

jtoh:
True, but my point was (I wasn't clear in my explanation) that last year a lot of NYPS girls chose to go to NYGH compared to other years because they liked the principal. And because they could get in based on lower affiliation scores, more places were taken up. Hence there were fewer places left for non-affiliates. So those few who managed to get in were the top few thereby leading to a higher COP for NYGH last year.

Out of curiosity I checked out the statistics for PSLE aggregate scores of both NY and RGS for 2009.
Nanyang
Lowest non-affiliated 263
Highest non-affiliated 283
Non-affliated mean 268
Lowest affiliated 250
Highest affiliated 276
Mean affliated 257
RGS
Lowest 260
Highest 285
Mean 267

good points
BTW, those scores above 280 can be counted with all the fingers on one hand, boys included
a more representative measure is to see the median score
