The need for balloting for within 1km at Phase 2B for MGS came as a surprise to many people this year.

The whole P1 registration system needs to be re-looked at. Priority should be given to siblings and maybe alma mater. :?

Phase 2B should perhaps be scrapped and everyone should have a level playing field after phase 2A. Some schools are not being fair when it comes to selecting their parent volunteers, and some parents even find ways to use an alternative address to qualify within 1 km of the school, in the event of balloting.

Imagine the frustration :x faced by parents who plan ahead by purchasing / rentiing properties close to the school of their choice, and only to be unsuccessful when there is balloting. This trend also builds up the stress levels faced by parents who have planned similarly, and have children due for P1 registration in the coming years. Not to forget that the property developers are the ones taking advantage of proximity to popular schools as a selling point.

What also bothers me is that similar balloting histories have been noted in good neighbourhood schools which have producted top PSLE students.

My 2 cents on a rainy Friday morning!

I am with you, Sumitra. Yeah… what a crap to volunteer if you have vested interest, it’s not supposed to be called "volunteer" anymore!

          2bbtang, I have pm-ed you.

Wow, I din know this year phase 2B was so tough. I am one of those lucky parent that bet on phase 2B last yr, staying within 1-2km. Todate, I still feel very thankful to God for all his mighty works.

I feel sorry to know that 2bbtang din get a chance to even try balloting. I know how it feels cos I have been thru the P1 registration process. It’s scary.

After I got my girl in the sch, I realised that is actually not much different from other sch. The oni different that I see is that there are alot of rich parents from this sch that willing to spend alot on tuition/enrichment classes for thier girls. I guess this is one of the reason the sch has very good results.

              Hey Sleepylula,

Is alright. Although, I do feel really disappointed but I believe God has great plan for my girl. So, life still goes on.

Just now, when my kids were prayer before bedtime, I was so touched by my elder son. This is part of his prayer today,

\"Jesus, now I know that I am so blessed that I got into ACSJr with mommy going thru the balloting 2 years ago. I will promise to do well in school. And please help mei-mei to get into a good school too. Amen.\"

Awww... think thru these 2 weeks, my son was kinda aware what was going on, at least he knew that he can't take things for granted. 😉

This year was supposed to be one of the years with the lowest birth rates and many may not have expected the outcome of the P1 registration at some schools.

Some firsts noted at 2 popular schools:
MGS : Balloting within 1 km at phase 2B
RGPS : Balloting within 1 km at phase 2C

This does not give much options to some parents who are looking for an all girls' school.

                Sigh!

                        Sorry but I disagree

Schools like MGS, ACS were established by the Methodist Church in Singapore and one of their main original aims was to help provide Christian education for parents who wanted a balanced, God-centered education for their children. However, as the years went by and God blessed these schools with success, more and more parents wanted to send their children to these schools (despite not being Christians themselves or not having contributed anything to the churches or anything related to the Methodist organisations in Singapore).

Please don't take this as a religious comment... What I am trying to say is that Phase 2B is fair for people who have common interests and investments with certain organisations, churches or societies in Singapore and ESPECIALLY if they have contributed to these organisations in the past. E.g. can you imagine if a pastor has been serving in a church for 20 years, but is unable to send his son to the school that his church built?? That would be unfair right??

Actually, the current situation is already unfair to parents who qualify under Phase 2B. Ever since MOE changed the rules to make it compulsory for schools to split places between 2B and 2C, parents who deserve a place at their school of choice more than \"unrelated\" parents have lost places to these \"unrelated\" parents simply these \"unrelated\" parents could afford to buy a property within 1 km of the school...

My view is that, with the surge in applications to popular schools like MGS, RGPS, SCGS, etc... Phase 2B should still remain... But for ALL PHASES, priority should be given to Singaporean children first. Only when there are places left then PRs and foreigners can apply. It's a question of principle and issue of national education. Education in local schools is highly subsidized by our government and local students are not allowed to attend international schools. Local parents have commitments to work and family and cannot move house as-and-when they like. PRs and foreigners on the other hand, can simply buy a property within 1 km of a school they like 1 month before July and get a heads-up over their Singaporean counterpart in this manner. It's highly unfair and deprives another Sg citizen of a chance to experience 10 years in a great school.

Many sacrifices have been made by our Singaporean teachers, parents and alumni over the years to build up our good schools to what they are today.... We should be preserving their places for our children, not foreigners!!

(sorry if i offend any non-Singaporean parents here)
