IMO, parents should not force their child to take HCL if their child has problem coping with it. It might have adverse effect and causing the child to reject the language totally.
Better study normal chinese and enjoy it. -
If the child has to spend a lot more time on HCL, then he/she should drop it at P5. From what I understand, even normal Chinese is not easy either.
My son is in P4 this year…in a SAP school. Most prob I will ask him to drop it bcos his other subjects are getting tougher, esp Math. -
What I heard from dd CL teacher (Non SAP School), once the children are chosen or appeal to taken HCL in P5, they are not allowed to withdraw in the midst of P5. They have to stay on until the end of P5 then can chose to opt out. Therefore have to assess the child ability carefully otherwise it would be very torturing if have problem coping with it.

If the child didn't do well at the end of P4 for HCL, then his teacher will encourage him to drop it and go for normal Chinese at P5. But neighbour told me that if the child's parents insist on him/her continuing it at P5 and yet don't make it at CA/SA, then would still need to drop.
I see my son's P4 textbook. :scared: it's really tough esp 4B. -

May be different school have different policy. One of the dd classmate’s fathers told me his request to withdraw his son from the HCL this March was rejected by the school and his son has to stay until end of this year. He now regretted as he was the one insisted and appealed to take HCL.
Yes. The CL work is getting tougher especially in P5. Although my dd is taking normal CL, however her CL teacher is quite aggressive. She wants the class to complete most of the Exercise in 知识报 including of P5 and P6 高级华文练习 and go through with the class next day. Therefore what I do is ask dd to provide me her version of 理解问答 and we would work together to modify and at the same time teaching her some 成语, 词汇 to attempt to the questions -
My son’s tutor told me to get the ‘Higher Chinese Comprehension’ for him. Based on what she observed, the comprehension passages in PSLE exam is tough and it’s advisable to use an assessment book with challenging comprehension passage for exposure.
Some ‘Higher Chinese’ assessment books are not that challenging, so I do shortlist at home and then go to Popular to check up the books there. With subjects getting tougher at upper primary, it’s more advisable not to push the child with HCL if he/she is having difficulties coping. -

I guess we have no choice but to do our best to help our child getting the better grade.
Hopefully our efforts are pay off.

Brenda,
I have to admit, HCL is tough esp after P3.
Even though my son switched to individual tuition at P1, I still coach him because tutor comes only once a week. 听写/默写 as well as 造句 and those etc etc have to help him. Now I leave it to him to study his 听写/默写 but he has to get 95%.
For my daughter, we are going to register her in CHIJ TP where Chinese is 2nd language.
All the best to you too :celebrate: -
