hi notabox,

My ds's piano teacher is also his speech & drama teacher. So maybe I know you. Would you by any chance be shifting house in sept and be my good neighbour?

Yes! 😉
Are you planning to send/fetch your ds to school or engage school bus service?

Now I know who you are already. Looks like our ds are fated to spend most of their early childhood together. From same infant care, to childcare, to pri sch and now even neighbours.

Hope next time they don't end up fighting for the same girl  . Btw, I've PM you.

May I know what is electone?
Oh, it is basically an electronic organ. 😄

You mentioned because of big number, you are going to send your ds to abacus, out or curiosity, how big is the no ?
From what I know, to really have a good foundation of abacus, you need to learn it for at least 2 yrs. And if you stop the lesson, you will still need to practise it often else the skill/technique of calculating might be forgotten or inaccurate. It is better for you to find out more before you send your ds for the course.

Parents of P1, the school has given out the reading booklet (with poems) and the phonics booklet. However, my boy told me the teachers do not go through them during class. Is that so? We have to go through with the kids ourselves?

My boy is in Widsom 1.

😉 Which grade he is in now? Once he needs to use the paddles, he will have to sit down.

 I know nothing about Piano...ds just started this year, only know he is in level 2 books now.

IJJ:

Thanks for all the response
hope my son can cope in PHPP next year P1
he's a smart boy, watches too much ORTO TV and youtube cartoons
how do you parents cope with comptuer/ tv times for the children?

many thanks
david1234

I only allow my preschooler to use computer once a week and limited to an hr. My P3 uses every now and then with my supervision, the most an hr each time to check her mails/class blog/favourite websites. At some days, she does not touch at all. I occupy her free time with magazines/books she has interest in. I think she rather read hardcopies than on screen. 😉

As for TV, my preschooler watches her programmes about 30 mins to 1 hr in the morning and another 30 mins to 1 hr in the evening. Then the rest is news times, which we usually watch as family. My P3 seldom watch TV on weekdays. Maybe 1 or 2 movies (Ch5/Disney Channel) per week for her. Weekends, she will watch her favourite Ben 10 and Animal Planet/Nat Geo/Nat Geo Wild.

Someone asked, does PH has shorter weekday, answer is \"No\". School hours are the same. I know some schools dismiss students earlier on some days (for AM session), but not the case for PH.

Janet, Jennier's elder son is already in Sec1. CH6 last year.

We set password so that the pc can be logged in only with the password. Ds has no choice but to get permission each time he wants to use the pc. 👅

Like IJJ, I tried to occupy my kids with other interest and they can be pulled away from the tv quite easily. Maybe they are still young 👅.

That was me asking if there is shorter school days...noted the answer is no. Thanks!

I guess so! Hopefully their friendship will strengthen all the way into adulthood :D.

Haha...I was telling dh the same thing, about fighting over the same girl! Especially when there is just 1 among them going to PH.

Got your PM. 😉

I know most parents advocate teaching their kids on their own and I do agree that a child’s best teacher is his parent but only if the parent know how to teach well.

I am weak academically (still can’t get the rules of grammer right most of the time) and have really quick temper…not cut out to teach at all. The last thing I want is to have my children hate learning because of me scolding them all the time.

I have since put away the guilt of having to outsource the teachings because in no way am I less concern of my children’s well being then parents who teach their own children. There is a lot more we need to teach our children than just academic subjects so since my strength is not in this area, I rather concentrate on teaching my children in other areas such as their social and moral skills.

Just to share my thoughts. 😄

I guess you must have your reasons to outsource the teaching aspect. Honestly, yours truly here is hopeless in Maths. I can't even teach my son Maths at all  ...he has since given up asking me anything related to Math. Gotta wait till daddy returns home from work.
It was very tough when son was in P1...he was adjusting and I had to study his books, make many visits to Popular (still doing that)...lots of scolding too bcos he refused to cooperate.
wow, thats a lot of enrichment!!

Can you give me an idea how much these enrichment costs?
so that I need to work harder .. to provide for my 4 kids,
thanks

david 😢 😢 😢 😢

Pls don't be too affected by what other people are doing. What I've learned at KSP is that the best learning is direct from parent to child. I know of quite a few parents whose kids have minimal tuition but are still amongst the top of cohort. Works wonders for the bonding too.

Besides, every kid is different. Some kids may even react unfavourably if overwhelmed by too much enrichment.

Hi david1234, I agreed with markfch. Just do within your means and what you deem is the best for your kids. I will not have sent ds to these enrichment prgrams :moneyflies: if I am good at teaching  .
Hi hi,
I've not been active again for a while. Forgot my password again and had to reset.
Saw alot of new parents! Welcome Welcome!

Yup, David,
Don't worry, like wat Mark and Notabox said, its not the quantity of enrichment dat matters but the quality. And quality means we need to assess our kid's strengths and weaknesses and add the external boost only where they are weak (and where we are weak at :stupid:).

My elder one gets external help in maths (where I'm really weakat 😛 ) and eng compo (where I'm lousy at instiling interest in her). So mum is her coach for Science, Eng Paper 2 and Chinese.
My younder one gets a huge dose of drilling in Chinese externally. So I basically have to coach her in Maths and Eng.
Along the way, I change strategies and add on or take off external boosters as required.

My gal's teacher also did not cover the reading booklet and phonics booklet. I just asked her wat happened? Why issue the booklets and did not follow up? Seems like the teachers have problem with execution again?

Hi prisnkc and periwinklejoy, not sure whether this parent of P2 can enlighten. Last year, when my dd brought back the booklet, it was meant for the parents to go thru the passages with them and assess them. We need to acknowledge their readings. The only problem parents faced was how do we assess, what should be the right expectation? Her teacher ran thru with them only occasionally. They took two passages from the booklet for the SA1 and SA2 orals so it would be good to practise them. I believe the teachers wanted the parents to be involved where possible, basically at P1, the kids should be able to read confidently and fluently.
