Singaporean born and bred. She's the era where the garmen let parents choose either the dialect or hanyupinyin surname for the kid...actually, it's still happening today. So Isabelle Li's parents are Mr and Mrs Lee.

Sad to say, USA n many of d top sporting nations' best in
dis age group chose not to participate.
China is hosting d next YOG in Nanjing,
so dat could explain China's interest in making
dis YOG a success.

I suggest dat is not a valid point.
d support for dis YOG idea was not unanimous even within IOC.
Some countries were not fully supportive.
There is little coverage in US major sports media.
d Olympics itself is a huge brand name
but u don't see many big international brands supporting YOG
doesn't dat tell u something?

so might as well make d best of it.

I remember when Feng Tian Wei won China in recent table tennis match, my boss (China Chinese) was so disappointed. I told him that.... well it's like China Vs China. it's just that these foreign talent wearing Spore flag were not given the same opportunity in China and they found it in Singapore.

So I am really proud that Isabelle is not a foreign talent and our very own home grown talent. That is very encouraging for our children. It's a hope that everyone has a chance so long as you've the passion and the talent. So it's not limited to foreign talent only.

D amount dat SYOGOC could give to athletes' parents
by way of free tickets is infinitesimal compared to what's
already been spent on this YOG.
A little gesture like dat will generate some goodwill,

To your point, I think you agree that $1200 is an excessive amount to spend. I do not disagree about goodwill, BUT, one needs to be careful not to over-generalise and reduce everything to the lowest common denominator. I.e., you cite the example of the YOG athlete with hawker parents. Do they deserve some form of external support? Probably. Heck, if I knew who they were and they said they couldn't afford tickets, I would buy it for them personally.

However, does the Merc driving father of local YOG athlete need the same level of support? Others may disagree, but I don't think so.

Point being, blanket free tickets to YOG relatives is a lousy and ineffective way of reaching the disadvantaged, if that were the objective.

If one lets the small things get in the way of doing big things, we will never get to do the big things. A personal philosophy of mine is that if in a particular endeavour, you did not encounter setbacks and issues, it probably wasn't a very difficult one to do in the first place.....

The decisions to do things in certain ways, for better or worse, have already been made. Some of the implementation have been well thought through, some less so. Its always easy in retrospect to be armchair critics and nitpick on peripheral issues. But sometimes we do not have the benefit of a higher level view across all issues and constraints, or bear the responsibility for balancing the needs of all the different parties.

Anyway, do sit back and enjoy all the positives from the YOG, which me and my sons are, tremendously. Try not to let the few hiccups derail the many wonderful highlights, I'd rather be championing Isabelle Li than Lynette Ng....

It is just a token of recognition for all athletes' families
n shouldn't differentiate between d haves n have-nots.

I am not nitpicking on peripheral issues.
Indeed I answered in an earlier post dat
all such issues shd be put aside n let
d youth enjoy their moment.
But dis issue I deemed relevant enuf
to be highlighted now cos' it wouldn't matter after d Games.

Recall d food served to volunteers?
I learnt dat they were served this standard (rather sub standard) food
during their training which was months bf d YOG proper n
up till 12th Aug
bf a public outcry brought about d appropriate n necessary response.

Sometimes when one sits high up a tree
he can't see d shit going on under d canopy. :lol:
