I'm from hci sec 1. in my time table, 8 periods spent on LA (english) and only 7 spent on chinese.
Anyone has such info for Sec 1 in RI? Then we can see at least from curriculum time wise, whether SAP schools indeed allocate more time for Chinese at the expense of English. -

RI is not SAP schoolxxjustakidxx:

For HCI as mentioned above by xxjustakidxx, english got more time than chinese -

I think another way is comparing between different schools. Just for example, if Sec 1 in RI has 10 periods on English, but just 5 on Chinese, then we know that HCI indeed allocate more time on Chinese compared to non-SAP schools such as RI. -

As outlined in previous postings, HCL is only one subject and the only one taught in chinese. All others are conducted in english.
There is no SAP school here that emphases chinese over english. Hope that sets the record straight once an for all. -

Thanks INNOVATE. I know where you are coming from. My elder son is in HCI and I agree with you completely. Just that since somone brought up the number of CL vs Eng periods per week, I am wondering if we know such data from other schools for an objective comparison about time allocated for HCL lessons.wonderm

it does not mean less period means less emphasis on it
from the recent DSA exercise by RI, some went under mother tongue domain, and came out complaining the questions are out of the world
some people said when you go RI, your chinese standard drop, some says their HCL standard is not easy either
anyway, as innovate has said, there is no school emphasises chinese more than english
those who are in doubt should make personal effort to visit those ‘perceived’ chinese schools’ open house and experience first hand -
Glad to hear from you. Hope your elder kid is doing well.
Non-SAP schools also have students taking HCL. Generally, the number of hours allocated for the study of chinese is similar whether SAP or non-SAP. It’s just that one studies chinese whereas the other studies HCL within the allocated time frame.
It’s the weaker students given remedial classes in CL or HCL. -
I would like to throw my 2 cents worth into this HCL issue.
From what i hear, most of the RGS girls opt for HCL whether they had taken CL or HCL in primary school (I understand the same in RI) although I dont have the actual statistics. When we were deciding if my daughter should sign up for HCL or CL in sec 1, we were strongly encouraged by other parents at the school to do HCL. The seniors also encouraged the girls to go for HCL, reason being that (sadly) once you pass O levels HCL, you "dont ever need to do chinese in JC again". I have friends who with much apprehension, gave in to their daughters (who had taken CL in primary school) who insisted on taking HCL because almost all of their friends do. One of my daughter’s friend failed every Chinese tests up to Sec 3 and when her parents approached the teacher, they were told that if she fails again in Sec 4, she can opt to take CL instead of HCL.
Since the students ultimately all take the same range of A levels subjects, English is still primarily the main language used. A friend’s daughter struggled with HCL in primary GEP in RGPS but later went on to excel in it when she went to NYGH and my friend believes that the environment allowed her the opportunity to learn and use the language more. That I see as one of the advantages of going to NYGH/HCI. -

Yes, HCL in RI/RGS is not easy either. My son's primary school chinese teacher said that their chinese standard would drop for those who went on to RI but she's not worried about those going to HCI. The RI/RGS students I know all take Chinese tuition and some going to 2 different tuition centres just as probably the HCI/NYGH kids do.it does not mean less period means less emphasis on it

You have summed up correctly. University MT requirement is a pass in H1 MT or H1 MTB or D7 in Higher Chinese.
Given the right climate and encouragement, a student who showed no interest in chinese at primary level can clear HCL at GCE O -level. Absolutely no problem.
It bears repeating, I have encountered many many times.
