haha.... whenever they drop a loose tooth, my girls used to put their baby tooth under their pillow. In the morning, they will receive a note from the tooth fairy* and $2**.
*tooth fairy aka daddy. When they were younger, they were so amazed and believed that the tooth fairy actually existed. The tooth fairy will write notes like \"you are a brave girl\", \"so proud of you\" and \"remember to brush your teeth everyday\". The girls will be so thrilled to find these notes in the morning.
As they grow older, they realised that the tooth fairy is their father - recognised his handwriting (even tho he would deliberately write funny or with his non-writing hand). But we never admit it. Still, the girls play along now.
** sometimes, the tooth fairy runs out of $2 notes and have to leave a $10 note instead! I was like :!: Told him that he's tooth fairy, not santa claus

My child’s secondary set of teeth is all growing hay wire…kindly suggest a reasonably charging Dental clinic for a 12yr old for putting Braces. I heard that if we go via polyclinic, it wd be under subsidised charges but there is a long Queue. Kindly suggest the best way of getting it done?

There are many good private orthodondists.
Where do you stay?
I have good recommendations in Punggol (the ortho I went to) and Novena/Bukit Timah (the ortho my mum went to).
Actually, once they are changing new set of teeth and you see that they are crooked, should go to orthodondist IMMEDIATELY.
My sis went when she was P3 and her teeth got corrected as they grow and she did not need braces and has a set of perfectly aligned teeth now.
Cheaper and less painful. -
HI All, Is it true that there isn't any subsidy for orthodondists? I have got my Girl 12 this year to see the dentist in her school and got a letter from them but it stated no Subsidy to see a specialist.
please advice how much for braces? :?: -

Never too late to start lah. I like to think it's one of those childhood memories that they will happily remember when they grow older.

They actually differentiate it into 2 types: Cosmetic & MedicalHI All, Is it true that there isn't any subsidy for orthodondists? I have got my Girl 12 this year to see the dentist in her school and got a letter from them but it stated no Subsidy to see a specialist.

For cosmetic cases, no subsidy. However, the price at Singapore National Dental Centre is still cheaper than private.
For medical cases, it is highly subsidized. How to classify as medical? If the teeth is giving problems like poor chewing (mastication) resulting in poor digestion, or if the teeth is positioned in a way that you really can't brush properly resulting in massive decay, or if the teeth is causing speech problems. Sometimes, the teeth is overcrowded and is pressing on nerves, also considered medical.
For referral to see the specialist, there is consultation charges for the specialist and it is not subsidized unless you are on FAS. And for patient requested referrals, usually there is no subsidy.
For private orthodondists, it really depends on the complexity of the cases.
For my mum, she only needed to shift the front 8 teeth of the bottom row. She paid around $800 for 1 year (excludes her additional scaling and polishing but include retainer).
Typical cases without extraction like mine will be around $2k - $3.5k, depending on the orthodondist. Duration is around 1yr +.
For typical cases with extraction (like my hub's) will be around $3.5k - 5k, depending on the orthodondist. Duration can be up to 3 years. For my hubs, he went under 'subsidized' at NUH cos his is medical reason (rotting tooth due to hidden corner that could not be brushed). However, for subsidzed care at NUH, it is done by STUDENTS, then checked by professors. Not too bad, but some people don't feel comfy. My hubs paid total of $1.5k for his rather serious case (6 teeth extracted, with 2 extracted under operation by professor).
FYI, you need not pay the lump sum at first visit.
Usually the cost breakdown is like this:
First visit - $100+ for assessment and mould making (usually not in package unless you neg)
Second visit (or go to X ray centre) - $100+ for dental X ray (not in package)
Third visit - 20 - 30% deposit to confirm and discuss procedure (duration, etc)
Fourth visit onwards - $100-300 usually in this range (like installments) until agreed package amount is totally paid off
So it is spread over quite some time.
From first visit to X-ray to confirm can be quite fast, around 1-2 weeks.
For subsequent visits, it is usually spaced a month apart. So only around 20-30% of the cost upfront when first put on the braces. Subsequently it's more like 'installment' already. -
