Hi Pummanuel
Thanks for such a detailed explanation of iMaths.
Can I ask you something about Fastrack Music (or ABC Music)? This is included as part of the extended programme.
Do they learn notes reading in this course? Or is it covered under one of the enrichment programme called Harmony Music ?
Regardspummanuel:
Hi GTGT, my daughter is attending iMaths.GTGT:
Anyone with news on I-Maths ?
iMaths is provided from nursery onwards. The workbooks are written in English but the course is conducted in Mandarin. Perhaps this is the reason why not many parents signed up for it as our pri maths curriculum is in English.
A check in the internet seems to suggest it's written by a UK professor. However, Mrs Patricia Koh mentioned some collaboration with Chinese professors in the annual seminar for PG parents last year.
Contrary to what I thought, iMaths is not about numbers only at nursery level. The bulk of the exercises are on whole brain training. I've attached a few exercises for your reference. I understand that number bonding will come into focus gradually in K1 and K2.
I'm happy with iMaths as I had problems teaching my DD Maths at home though we are doing well for languages. To avoid resistance to Maths, I left the teaching to iMaths. After iMaths, she develops a liking for Maths (which I nearly killed) and it increases her confidence in the subject too.
The only complaint I have is the teacher is reluctant to let me bring the workbook home after class. She explained that my DD is coping very well, so there is no need for further assistance. I felt that this is teacher specific as another teacher allowed me to bring the workbook home for some time. However, they do return us the workbook after it has been completed.
Statistics wise, there are 20 odd children in the nursery class. Most are from the full day class. There are 3 teachers in class, 1 teacher will be in charge of teaching and the other 2 will help out. The class for Serangoon branch is conducted on Thursday, 3-4pm. As my DD is in the am session, Ms Wee has very kindly allowed her to take a nap with the full day children before class, at no extra costs. Course fee is $80/mth.

no no, i am not staying at pasir ris.. it was just that ada mentioned that they will be getting a bus for 2 kids staying at pasir ris..
we are staying in the north... still quite far though..
tinkerbell,
initially, i was thinking of putting my kid for half-day as well but after discussion with the principals of serangoon & mt emily, i will try out the full-day... cos from their experience, kids will cry a 2nd time when u convert from half to full-day... so, their advice is to just let them cry once...

Hi Koolmama,Crystalbelle
Wow, i didn't see any replies for some time, went away for awhile and now suddenly so many replies!! Ha ha
Yes yes there are at least 3 of us here in KSF whose 2008 babies are going to be in PG next year!! Fun right
Tanya didn't tell me how many there were, but she did mention there were only 3 spaces left after i registered... Thus if there are suddenly going to be many more parents enquiring about PG class then she'll have to open up another class for PG. Right now, there is just one PG class (max 14 kids, 2 teachers).
My daughter will only start in Feb or March though!! So you can look out for me, ya?
Hmm... i'm wondering whether the grandfather i saw was Preciousmoments' dad/FIL... heh heh

My DD is not feeling well recently, so didnt really log in to KSP forum. The flu bug is vicious this round
Oh...why are you starting your DD later?
Can consider coming in earlier, I am sure your DD will love school.
You going for full day or half day?
Left with 3 places... hmmm...hope they really keep their students at 14 max.
There should be around 10 exising students moving up to PG.
A few of the children in her current group are either moving back to their country of origin or transferring to other school.
Btw, are you a local? -

hi keas,
hubby & i viewed a couple of preschools & talked to the principals/teachers. mindchamps is not bad but hubby did not like the fact that it is normally located in a shopping center... he preferred preschools that have playgrounds & lawns for the kids to run around.. but that's our preference...
actually, u have to visit the centers to see if it fits your needs...
we live in the north so tanglin is really far for us... so, hubby & i have decided to give it a try & see how it goes..
Any comments on Pat's Schoolhouse at Katong ? -

She is happily back in school now.
Actually, I am very confused over the number of students in the class now.
As the students are mostly \"international\", its common to have kids going back to their countries.
Also heard that some parents were on waiting lists to their international schools so once they are accepted, they will move over.
I dunno how many children left her class last month.
But from the latest newsletter, there were 3 new kids in Sep for her class. -
Hi Crystallbelle08
Glad to know that ur dd is well and settle back in sch.
I think i better call Tanya tmr & ask her about the class size. Am really curious to know.
Has the renovation complete? Want to visit the sch with my dd again after the renovation. -

My daughter only attended ABC Music & Harmony Music for a month before I decided to opt her out of it as she needed to nap and I preferred to keep her at home for my personalised enrichment programmes. In fact, before we opted out, she attended all the additional programmes as there was a special package for extended programme + 3 enrichment programmes, namely Harmony Music, iMaths & swimming.
For ABC music, it's alike the music class in the am session. The children will get to sing and dance. Personally, I'm not too fond of the extended programme as I see it as a repetition of the am curriculum. However, I do know of many parents (working and non-working) who like it.
For Harmony Music, for children without formal piano/keyboard lesson, they will start the first year without their personal keyboard. There will be a music book (excluded from course fee) which the teachers will use to teach them keyboard basics like recognising the keys, fingering, etc. The children will take turns to play on the teacher's piano/keyboard. After the first year, in K1, the children will have to buy a keyboard and practise selected pieces during HM class. It's alike the classes conducted by the external enrichment centres. As my daughter didn't proceed to K1 for HM, I'm not sure what is the teacher-student ratio.
Like what Buds once advised, it's good to visit the school in the pm and see for ourselves how the classes are conducted. As my DD is the talkative type, I will also seek feedback from her.
Lastly, for iMaths, the workbooks come at extra costs too.
