Can you really do that ? Need to write in or inform the FT?
I hv decided not to send my boy to sch next Mon and the days after the last paper. Scared of the bad influences. -
Hi Jennifer,
I would be keeping my boy at home in the 2nd week of Nov…he has an op scheduled for the 11th of next mth…keeping him at home will ensure that he (TOUCHWOOD) doesn’t fall or get a flu and have to postpone his op.
Honestly, I am very scared of bad influences around him too. He told me his classmate says the F word as well as some others who likes to tease/bully. -
Hi all mummies,
If you are considering buying books (El or CL), can consider going to Bookfest@Singapore this Dec (10 till 19).
Usually, there are wide range of books, bring Ds/Dd to browse and perhaps thru' this, can arouse their interest in reading their \"own\" type of books.
For more information, can view at this website :

Talking about Bookfest, do remember to get stickers when you buy books at regular prices at Popular stores and redeem them at the Bookfest.Hi all mummies,

I got some stickers when I bought a table light for my son last week. Will need to get CL assessment books and handbooks (课文手册). -

Markfch, cannot read it like a storybook.
I'm also using 四五快读 for my ds after strong recommendation from Tamarind. The only issue I find with this series is that they are not in story form, more like pages after pages of individual words. So if a kid is reluctant to read chinese initially, it would not be surprising to see the kid resist 四五快读 more.Trapwithin:
I was reading through the Si Wu Kuai Du material recommended by Tamarind in the other thread. I think the scaffolding is pretty good and believe my dd can still benefit from it.
Though this series do not have a direct impact on their HCL academic result but I hope it will stimulate the interest in reading CL books.
You might want to start that with your 4 yr old
This series need extensive parents involvement. Kids will definitely be bored. You need to teach through activities not just plain reading.
The book also mentioned some suggestion on how to use the material. -

One good thing about the current Singapore Education System is that things can be escalated. Talk to the VP or P if necessary.VbusyMum:
Jennifer, thanks for sharing. Hopefully, the FT speak with the child/his parent after she has cooled down and investigate if anyone has \"framed\" the boy. Of course, it is not right for him to do what he has done even though he may be wronged. But you are right...some kids can't express themselve well in such situations.
In the end, the truth was revealed. BUT the FT did not apologise to the boy for the scolding she rained on him before finding out the truth. So the boy was \"Adults no need to say sorry ah?\"
Luckily only a mth more to go.

The easiest way is from http://www.sgshinekids.com, you can self collect ot they deliver, but it is slightly more exp .. around S$42.
alternatively, you can buy it from http://www.dangdang.com - a chinese portal but it doesn't work well with VISA, so have to use AMEX. Delviery is also slightly longer but cheaper .. around S$23 ... I think. -

I am just wondering whether is it the same across all levels. My dd has a light-blue PHPPS Chinese Folder in which they have to fill up the contents with the dates on which they had read CL story books. According to my dd, the first 10 dates will be filled in by her CL teacher. So, they do read chinese books in school. We just have to complete the remaining (can't remember how many...at least 10) at home. CL teacher collected the folder at fourth term. On top of reading these CL books, they have to work on four 小书 whereby the kids will create their own little booklets, providing pictures based on titles and some given pictures to form stories. One was a Dec hol HW assigned to last year's P1s. However, this was what I didn't know...a 最佳阅读奖 in the form of a trophy was awarded to kids a few weeks' back based on the contents in the light-blue folder and the quality of the 小书. Their works were being displayed outside the Hosanna Auditorium for about 2 weeks.Hi IJJ,
Other than the CL textbooks that my son will ever touch will be the compo reference books WHEN he has to do a 作文. I have a headache just thinking of his lack of interest in reading. This Nov/Dec, will get both my kids to pick up a book to read and then tell me the contents.
My point is...to a certain extent, the CL department does encourage reading CL books.
For me, I will select the CL story books for my dd from the NLB. She has passed reading picture books so in order to spur her interests, I have to be very careful in my selection on chapter books...sometimes till my eyes crossed... I will select books with content similar to her EL story books so she could relate. I used to read one chapter with her first, and she read the rest on her own. I will read her CL story books so we could discuss the funny parts and talk about something in common. Being the faster reader, I'll throw in some interesting parts that I had read but not in full so that she'll want to find out on her own. It works. -
