I'm also using 四五快读 for my ds after strong recommendation from Tamarind. The only issue I find with this series is that they are not in story form, more like pages after pages of individual words. So if a kid is reluctant to read chinese initially, it would not be surprising to see the kid resist 四五快读 more.markfch:

Though this series do not have a direct impact on their HCL academic result but I hope it will stimulate the interest in reading CL books.

四五快读 is a series of 7 books popularily used by PRC parents to teach their pre-schooling kids about CL reading. Hence the words 四五cos it's suppose to be for 4-5 yrs old kids.
Since locally our CL standard is nowhere as good, it's equivalent to our 8-9 yrs old standard. It is supposed to contain 80% of the common words that is used by children's storybooks. These books are not easy. Parents have to possess a basic standard of CL in order to teach their kids. At book 3, I have to resort to using the dictionary to learn a couple of the unfamiliar words (no hanyu pinyin).
My gut feel is that if a kid can master all the words in this series by P1, that means the foundation is strong and lower pri HCL will be a breeze. I can show you a few of these books this coming Sat if you're curious.

markfch, thanks...if you don't mind, must really take a look.....i have people going over to china every month, can get them to carry back....books are very cheap there, can really save alot....

I read the recent posts on teaching chinese. I must say all you parents are on the right track! In Singapore, many kids struggled with Chinese, so if we can get our kids to do well, they will be at an advantage academically.
For my family, we make it a point to speak in Mandarin to all my girls since birth. It is a rule at home to speak in Mandarin. All my dds know that, however I still need to remind my eldest dd to speak Mandarin sometimes cos the older she gets, the more exposure to speaking English with her friends. When she was 5, she absorbed all the Chinese poetry like a sponge (kindy enrichment), now she couldn't remember half of them. However, cos she was exposed to them before, it became easier to relearn them again.
I like Tamarind's posts and I read them a very long time ago and they are very inspiring. However, I did not adopt them cos my dds' kindy are already doing Chinese Reading Enrichment with flashcards. I used to create my own games using these flashcards, e.g. 词语搭配. I started doing daily (weekdays) chinese assessment books with them bet 4yo - 5yo. As it is a disciplined daily routine, they will consistently be exposed to Chinese.
IMHO, I felt we should do something related to Chinese everyday so that it became part of their lives and they will be comfortable with the language and become a natural as they grow older. I am thankful that my dd had a strong foundation thus she is not rejecting the language and enjoying it still. I hope the parents who posted the last few posts will also achieve the same results for their kids in their Chinese learning journey. It will help them greatly in PHPPS.

Agreed. I remember encouraging my dd to speak Chinese and she protested about the lack of chinese vocab to express herself. So I quickly send her for pre-primary enrichment program to increase her chinese vocab. It has been helpful and now we speak both English and Chinese at home .. though she is still more prone to English
The main reason for using 四五快读 is mainly to inculcate her interest in reading Chinese book. I hope she will be able to read some of the Ji Yong novel next time. -

You hope your dd to read 金庸 novels? For me, I'm counting the days when ds will be ready to read 四大名著. Think have to count in terms of years though, haha. -

Does the student edn count? If yes, wld be in upper pri levels provided PH continues to use those titles. -
There is an international school behind Bt Timah CC, think it is Canadian International Sch.
I was on a bus going to Boon Lay the other day and passed by a construction site for Canadian International Sch.
Anyone aware if the current site of the sch is govt owned land? Just thinking aloud whether it is possible for the sch campus to be used as a holding site for govt sch in the MOE sch upgrading programme.
