Do us parents a favour...
I wouldn't really know your son, it's his preference. Perhaps you could tell me more about your son, for example his likes and dislikes, as well as how hardworking he is, and how willing is he to tahan hardships.
I think nus high, while having a mugging culture, is much slacker than other schools, not in terms of academic rigor, but in terms of free time available. Students tend to have much more time for their own pursuits, be it academic, physical, or romantic.
What in ur opinion is the kind of personality that would thrive in NUSH?
What kind of people would feel stiffled there? May be you see some examples around you...
And if you can what sort of kids would thrive better in RI than at NUSH?
In terms of scholarships etc for overseas U, are those in RI/HCI better placed bcos of their school or their calibre or a combination of the two? are students from RI/HCI get more scholarships bcos of their larger number or bcos of their track record? I realise that individual strength is the key factor but do the above play a significant role....
I have heard that there are a handful atleast from NUSH who are persuing a non -maths/sci path ; would you say they are misfist there? or while they are pretty good in Sci/maths; their interests have changed ad are moving towards ecom/humanities, etc....
Sorry for troubling you , but the above would really help us parents...
I have more to ask , but am not pushing my luck here
Thanks! -
One more thing, are any of the third language being taken with in the school campus?
Interested in French and CSP (Chinese Special Program, i think)

I honestly feel you ask some rather awkward (and somewhat unfair) questions for a NUSH kid here. He's not obliged to answer any of those qns. There is no need to compare as you already show some bias towards your prefer institution. There are no such thing as misfits even as there are folks in RI IP programme who chose the polytechnic programme in their 5 years of study. Mind you !

My P6 RGPS GEP girl is on the waiting list for NUSH. Even she has 2 other CO, somehow she still prefer NUSH. -
Hi,
For prospective parents/students who are interested to know more about NUS High, a lot of information is available in Collegetalk, a website maintained by NUSH graduates and seniors.
For propective students, a student's view on why you should/should not go NUSH
http://nushscollegetalk.blogspot.com/search/label/NUS%20High%20Applications
Statistics on Uni acceptance, scholarships awarded etc. (note that class of '09 and '08 only has 88 students each)

I somewhat agree with walterp - students who are determined to do well will thrive whether they are in top schools or neighbourhood schools, so there is no worry of misfit.
My son rejected RI to join NUSH during the DSA phase. Somehow he prefers NUSH, and he is doing rather well now, absolutely no regrets. -

Interestingly, I thought I saw many RGPS girls at the CO/WL briefing couple of mths back.

walterp, agreed these are some awkward q, and of course he has the liberty to answer or ignore them.

uhoobus - sorry if my questions are overwhelming - maybe i woke up on the wrong side of my bed  My apologies
walterp, I feel you wrongly understood my bias - I am rooting for NUSH - i think her personality would suit such an environment and we live quite close to it. It was her dream school till 6 months back and then god knows what happened - she still likes NUSH but she is sorta inclined to another school too which she did not get thru- maybe peer pressure. In fact I dont think she would thrive on her preferred school as much as in NUSH. We have abt a week to decide and i would not want to give her the wrong advice.
And in my enthusiam maybe have asked too much - what can i say I am KSP  -

A friend of mine raised this topic on Uni and scholarship etc.. and I was like what I have to think of that now itself, i mean the best get it anyways - but what about the average or just above average ? Numbers just give some consolation. So thanks for the url, i will check it out.
Totally agree with you that that there are many good schools for students to thrive.
When the child is clear what (s)he wants then is is easy to decide. Some know what is best for them , some have a good gut feel. Your son is one of those mature kids. And you obviously trusted his decision.
But what of those who cant be firm on what exaclty they want? Imho, this is the period to brainstorm all the pros and cons and then decide. Once the decision is made , we live with it knowing that we had analysed it from every angle possible given the time and circumstance. And beyond that it is destiny. But not until then.
Things may not go as per our plan or prediction but its knowing we did our role, helps. -
hi Sun_2010,
My advice to your daughter is to accept the NUSH DSA offer first. After the PSLE results are out, if her T-score is higher than the COP of her dream school, she can always appeal.
If she is not successful, there is another chance at the end of Year 2. With the strong Math & Science foundation at NUSH, there is no problem in coping with these subjects in her dream school. For humanities subjects, they are easier to pick up by reading texts.
Don't worry to much, whichever school your daughter goes to, just trust that she will be able to make the most out of it.
Some parents asked about the statistics for university admission and scholarships. I feel that whether students get admitted into top universities (or coveted course like medicine), or earn prestigious scholarships, it depends very much on the students themselves (academic performance, leadership, CCA, awards, interview etc.) and not on which schools they attend.

-
It seems that some have difficulties in deciding which school should their kids attend. On this occassion, there are several parameters one can draw upon:
Parents know their kids academic abilities and potential best. If a kid excels clearly in maths and science and just an above average in langustics, then NUS High is preferred choice. On the otherside, if one excels in both sciences and lingustics, then look at their passion and inclination.
Potential leadership assessment is another area to look for. If one prefers to work mostly alone and is meticulous, superb intelligent and of an inquisitive mind, NUS High is the choice. However, if one excels in academics and shows leadership potential than RI/HCI are preferred choices(see last phara for the reasons).
Assess whether a kid has the potential and passion to win top scholarships. For highly intelligent ones who are not keen to take on leadership, then A* Scholarship is the way to go and the obvious choice is NUS High. For those aspiring to head a ministry or even aspiring as a future national leader, then go for PSC Scholarship selection. Naturally, a top JC is the preferred choice.
Of course situation always change as nothing is certain. Parents have to be internally peaceful in helping their kids arrive at the right choices. Wisdom shall prevail!
