[Hougang] Primary Schools

If you have younger kids who are girls, then I would highly recommend you to choose a good Girls school rather than Co-ed (esp popular ones) coz chances of earlier phases before you being ‘doubled’ is very high (eg either mum or dad is alumni, grassroot, catholic, management committee, older siblings … iygwim. This was highlighted to me by a school clerk acquintance who has been working in schools for 28 years …

the good CHIJs near Hougang are Toa Payoh and St. Nicholas, both equally hard to get in even in phase 2B, no hope for my girl.
She is the youngest at home, both brothers in St. Grabriel as father is old boy. Has been considering CHIJ all these while, maybe I should drop by HIPS to find out more… -
If you can get into Holy Innocents in Phase 2B <2km, you should have a decent chance of getting a place in that school.

Yup I agree! Phase 2B less than 2km chance of getting in is still pretty high!

thanks!

Thanks for the \"assurance\". Went to the school to look see on last weekend and I'm quite satisfied with the school environment. Will enrol my girl on the 17th

Dear All KiasuParents,
I am new and was referred to this site by a friend. Our phase 2B plan (under alumni) for our eldest son to register for St. Andrew’s Junior for yr 2008 was thrown out by new MOE ruling. Now too late for any contingency actions. Just moved to kovan area end last year and stay within 1Km of Xinmin; 1-2Km of hougang pri, holy innocents, monfort, YCK, xinhua
Can only register under 2C. 1st preference is HIPS but chances slim. Only hope seems to be Xinmin for 2C.
Anyone here know anything about Xinmin pri ? Just move into this area and had not heard about this school, although xinmin secondary is famous. Can anyone help ?
Thanks. -
Dear All parents,
I am newbie here and chance upon this hougang thread. Anyone here can provide info on Xinmin primary ? This is the only school within 1Km for us under phase 2C. Thanks. -
Xin Min primary had balloting in 2006 for 1-2 km and balloting in 2007 for <1 km. The no. of vacancies this year has been reduced by 30. My teacher friend from Rosyth advised me that Xin Min is quite a good neighbourhood school. If you are within 1 km, suggest you go for the balloting. Think even if balloting, the rate of success is still reasonably good. Holy Innocent has balloting for < 1km last year. Success rate is about 50%.
BTW, dont understand how your alumni plan failed. Din hear any change in MOE rules. Alumni registration is under Phase 2A and not Phase 2B, and the registration closing date is today 11 Jul 08. -
Dear Mum2Gals,
Appreciate & Thanks for the info on Xinmin. Regarding your quest, SA alumni includes their pri,sec & JC. My wife was formerly from SAJC. According to the alumni 2 months back, this year MOE strictly enforce that only members from Pri alumni qualify for 2B. We were caught in the cold and our 2B plan just evaporated into thin air… Thanks again.
