yup, and will make it easier for kiasuparents to find useful info, without having to wade through countless pages of @#%$@#^% to find that one item you were looking for.

But people are free to post anything here, what to do? 😞

As an ex-NJCian, I only wish to see NJC regain its former glory

I cant understand why producing a president scholar is so impt as in maintaining the glory of the sch. Is that really a good measurement of how successful the sch is? What abt producing responsible, honest, honourable young adults who care & contribute to the society, who do no white collared crimes for own selfish gains, etc? Pple like me

At least, so far, NJC does not produce 'CEOs' who make headlines for all the wrong reasons ???? 😉
I also visited HCI pre-DSA - my DS did not like it, and I did not like it ( again, I stressed it is purely personal ), so we did not even apply for HCI ( not saying DS would be selected of cos, LOL ).

Basically, I did not want my son to be in an all-chinese sch ( though his chinese has improved by leaps and bounds in the past 2 years ), as I believed a multi-racial environment will make him a better person as well as stead him well in NS.
I have the same mindset too. When I go for openhouses, I don't just listen to the principal's speeches, I like to talk to the students there and feel the environment. I am impressed with schools that are vibrant and students who are humble and can carry and express themselves well.
          😄

For the JH1 parents, do you call your children everyday now that they are in boarding? I've seen parents making a trip just bc their child did not answer their call/sms. I personally don't, maybe SMS every few days or so, and certainly by thur/fri to check what time he's coming home. haha.

We still exchange msgs (mainly greetings) a couple of times everyday ... she will also call and share her joy and excitement when something good or funny happened. Overall, yes - the frequency has dropped.

 really? but I cannot agree more with what you say here.

A strong academic standing will make earning a living more comfortable, but even more important is to earn a living honourably.

              Strongly agreed with you, Jennifer.

We always communicate thru sms few times a week. I notice my girl has become more independent and cheerful after boarding. She enjoys her boarding (especially with her kaki around her) and she LOVES NJC.

Is interesting to read the debate regarding the significance of a school’s ability to produce a President Scholar. If this point is irrevelant to parents for some reasons, please do not send your kids to RI or HCI. These two institutions have special departments cater for this purpose. In particular, RI, is so determined to have at least one of its scholars becoming a President Scholar every year. Both instituions are competing against each other in this area.

Incidentally, NJC has made good progress in its march to produce one. After its absence for so many years, it managed to produce one in Miss Gan Su Yi, formerly from SCGS. She was the President of NJC Student Council yr 2008/2009.

The qualities of being chosen as President Scholar is exceedingly demanding that I see from the view point of one being anointed by God. Its far beyond ordinary human efforts.

I am alarmed after reading the recent posts. It begs the question how can a liberal arts education ever flourish in Singapore society when one can not even express a personal opinion without reservation? There will always be people who are for or against an issue/side but the act of sharing different perspectives and opinions is enriching and adds value and dimension to the way we think, act and live our lives.

Well I do agree that the candidate is indeed exceptional...but on being 'annointed by God' ?? :?

May be that is the reason that Catholic Junior College produced a President Scholar 2009/2010! 😉
