Is interesting to read the debate regarding the significance of a schoolβs ability to produce a President Scholar. If this point is irrevelant to parents for some reasons, please do not send your kids to RI or HCI. These two institutions have special departments cater for this purpose. In particular, RI, is so determined to have at least one of its scholars becoming a President Scholar every year. Both instituions are competing against each other in this area.
Incidentally, NJC has made good progress in its march to produce one. After its absence for so many years, it managed to produce one in Miss Gan Su Yi, formerly from SCGS. She was the President of NJC Student Council yr 2008/2009.
The qualities of being chosen as President Scholar is exceedingly demanding that I see from the view point of one being anointed by God. Its far beyond ordinary human efforts. -
I am alarmed after reading the recent posts. It begs the question how can a liberal arts education ever flourish in Singapore society when one can not even express a personal opinion without reservation? There will always be people who are for or against an issue/side but the act of sharing different perspectives and opinions is enriching and adds value and dimension to the way we think, act and live our lives.

Well I do agree that the candidate is indeed exceptional...but on being 'annointed by God' ?? :? -

Of course, the act of sharing of perspectives and opinions is indeed enriching. I have benefited from many sharings of ideas here. But we need to learn how to share them objectively.

[/quote]How can a JC produce a scholar in 1+ year? I would credit the secondary school, which, in this case is Catholic High School.

Generally, I am impress with the quality of debate in this forum. Parents do show a high degree of maturity and tolerance inspite of difference of opinions as seen in many threads.
Agreed with phankao that alot of sowing was carried out at secondary level. That seperate a good school from another. Its still alot depends on individual student who needs to have the high intellectual ability, outstanding leadership, sound character, willingness to serve, ability to handle stress, fortitude, wisdom and many other factors. In fact successful candiate has to possess qualities beyond all these.
Parents take pride when their kids are chosen. -
