All About Market Rates of Private Tutors

I made it thru the whole education system without a tutor and so did many of my friends. If there were any questions, we just asked other classmates or the teacher. What's wrong with the kids nowadays? Paying $100 for a tutor to teach primary curriculum?!


My kids are still in kindergarten so I have yet to see how they will do in primary schools. But I'd be really ashamed if I can't teach them at least up to P6 academically. Getting them to listen to me without driving me crazy is another issue though :stupid:

In a peculiar kind of way, I understood what you wrote better than you would have ever imagined. I suffer from the same ailment as you. You know the saying that 'familiarity breeds contempt', well it runs deep in my family.

Haha, we can teach each other's kids then and save that $100 for a nice meal!

Parent stress .. will definitely stress tutor.
Higher tuition fee also have higher responsibilities and higher stress.

Parents stress is come from exam test paper that set. If we only based on what have purely learnt from the text book and exercises in the activity book then sad to say the child may not able to handle those complicating questions like ratio etc during the exam.

Just my 2 cents thought

Think your approach is correct. No tuition unless absolutely necessary at lower primary level. Can understand parents supporting kids preparing for PSLE. Should try grp tution first before embarking on personal tutors, that's for sec going kids. Otherwise, difficult for parents to guide their kids after 0-level.

Have seen many many mistakes being made every year.

My son had group tuition for CL at P1...a friend advised me that it's not a good idea bcos 1) it's only once a week 2) he needs the one-to-one attention for HCL 3) foundation is to be built at P1 and 2.
Thus we switched him to one-to-one and his CL results improved. At that time, my worry was whether he will pass. It was really an eye-opening experience, learning how to coach him as well as buying assessment books.

For sec level, group tuition will be more interesting instead of the tutor breathing down the child's neck.

Now, I get my son to complete the chapters in the Maths assessment book and the CA/SA inside first. He does only 1-2 sets of past year papers nearer the exams. This way, it's more for exposure to how exam questions can be set.

Same goes for Science...I extract some questions and the answers for him to read...then he knows that ultimately the answers are the same but just the different style of the way questions can be set and how to answer questions to get those full marks

I agree that kids should be thoroughly clear with the concepts before they tackle the past year papers. These are meant to be used as a supplement to their revision, not substitutes.

Concepts must be clear and the child must understand his basic knowledge well b4 attempting past yr papers.
