How to tell if a child is gifted?

i'm sure all your kids are gifted in their own way and some of their early achievements are pretty impressive. Playing them down as been normal just makes us normal folks seem irrelevant. i strongly believe that genes play a big part in giftedness and you are one gifted mummy who chose to have 5 kids. Kudos!

Hi Jedamum, haven't 'seen' you around for some time (I was the one missing). Somehow, I believe to be accepted as normal is a gift. When a child excels, the difficulty he gets around him is so hard to bear. The other parents, the teachers, the principal, the friends (except that few good friends), sometimes, their own siblings.

I believe it is much more blessed if we can churn out great ordinary children who will do extraordinary things. That'll be my motto, for my children, for my students.

This is because he has hit the ceiling for some tests (so we know he is higher than some percentile, but don't know exactly where), and I could not find a psychologist who could test him further.

Hi 2ppaamm,

Has your child done a Stanford-Binet Form L-M? Cos' only this test can differentiate between IQ 140 and 180, especially in your case where your child hits the ceiling for most tests. Also it is suitable for gifted children with learning disabilities. It's an old form of the Stanford-Binet, but still widely accepted as a valid test to differentiate between a highly gifted and moderately gifted child. If you haven't had that, you should ask a psychologist for it.

There's only one psychologist in Singapore who can do this S-B test when I asked 3 years ago, the rest only administer WISC IV.

Also, it is not critical for me to do another IQ test just to know his IQ. I just want to complete the test we did halfway and submit that. Your info will be really good for those who want to test their kids beyond 160. I don't know if it was SB LM, I thought the psychologist told me she was doing SB V.

I tell you how I felt when we first did the test.

At first, it was wow! Nice! What a buzz. Then there were all these books to read about how to deal with kids like that at home. I felt like I struck gold because finally, there was this group of people who understood what I had to go through everyday just talking him round to having a meal or going to school for that one day. I could get help!!

2 years later, I'm like huh, what's that? So what? Git back here - you're not touching that computer/book/comic till you've finished your meal.

Moral of the story - the label is useful especially when you run into problems, and we've had so many! LIke any other label, it gives you a common understanding and a place to start searching for answers. But on a day to day basis, it's back to basics for discipline, same as for anyone. My son can do what others can't in some areas, and other kids can do miles more than he can in many others. Isn't that the same for everyone? It really doesn't matter. The son's mine. I've got to cater to his individual needs.

The scores don't matter if he hasn't picked up the right attitude towards life and learning anyway. I just have to make sure that he does.

IMO, a really professional clinic should be equipped to use both WISC and SB, cos' each measures slightly different things and tells a different part of the whole story. WISC is just popular in SG, so most of them might not want to invest in purchasing more than 1 test.

SB V is the 5th edition (SB IV is the 4th edition, etc.,) and no, it is different from the Form L-M. Just curious, are you referring to the WISC for your uncompleted tests?

The one clinic I know can only do sb v and not the older lm. All the clinics I called then said it was too old a test. I haven't bother to look the last 2 years.

Up til now, I still have to remind hubby not to snack before mealtimes & keep door open, esp if I'm walking right behind him, carrying his baby.

my girl is 1 jan 03 baby, and as moe says those born on eg 2 jan 02 - 1 jan 03 is one cohort, my girl ‘skipped’ one yr during presch and just turned 6 when she was p1 last yr.

she is not gifted but she copes well so far cos i started her early.
but for math, she is not that gd for prob sums cos maturity not there yet. so i dont fancy skipping

I heard 1 Jan kid has the option to choose which year to join from dd's enrichment teacher. Her gal also same birthdate as yours. She defer her gal for one year to join the 2003 kids in P1. According to her, no medical reason required. Hence, instead of being youngest in class, her gal is the eldest. Not sure how's her gal's grades in school though, didn't stay closely in touch

My boy is in a kindy, not CC cos his previous CC was totally not academic and their curriculum was too simple to the point my boy was very disruptive in class due to boredom.
