E3:
When the MA teacher called us up, she did not specify these training are for the MO competitions, but so happened, most pupils who went for the training did go for the competitions.Jennifer:
Definitely not all. Pupils to be recommended by the class MA teacher and then to be approved by the HOD MA.
These are for the ones going for the Math Olympiad Competitions, right?
Was php referring to those training for competitions or training for doing upper pri Math exam papers?
Not many pupils obtained platinium awards in the MO competition. I think it is either the 8 sessions are insufficient or the content of the training is not up to the competition stds. I know of one schmate who also attends xx centre got a platinium. -
you guys need to differentiate math training for :
1.) Math Olympiad competitions :(RI< NMOS, SMPOS, AMC, etc etc); versus
2.) Math training to tackle higher order math questions within scope of PSLE
there are sometime some questions in PSLE that is of math olympiad style, but not may, and not often…these are supposed the "killer" questions under normal PSLE candidates…some kids are prepared for it - depending how resourceful the teachers are as well as the learning pace of the kids too -

I agree with Mrsbongz. It's scary to read the posts here sometimes [/quote]At least you are now mentally prepared. Imagine some of us who were blur blur with our first child in this sch.
If you hv seen samples of exam papers for MA, then you wld see such MO qns appearing in section B, usu 1 to 2 qns. U want your boy to score full marks, then need to start on these.Jennifer:

Maths Olympiad training at p1? :faint:
I tell you, one day only got 24 hrs hor. I really cannot squeeze any more time out for Maths Olympiad training for ds. Unless I limit him to 5 hrs of sleep a day  . Joking only, even I'm not so crazy ok. -
sometime the school has a "math club"…and that is not meant for math olympiad competition training
some school make students sit for selected test before allowing them to join the math club
some school has an "advancec math club" from which the school team for math olympiad is picked
some school don’t formerly form a team, any one who wants to participate in the math olympiad competition will be endorsed -

For example, a excess/shortage question. there are 3 ways to solve, MO way, heuristic method and \"old uncle\" way - algebra which is also fall under MO method. At least 70%/80% of the PSLE questions can be solved using algebra. So if a kid is weak in modelling and heuristic approach, knowledge in MO and algebra will help....
U will find algebra a very simple topic covered in P6 textbook. No simultaneous equation taught.
I tried teaching my elder boy algebra last year, he refused to learn it, citing the MA teacher does not encourage this method for pri sch pupils. -

Some kids can 'visualize' these kind of questions in their brains, in other words, they could do it mentally. However, PSLE requires a method to be clearly shown so it's better to let the kids familiarize themselves with methods that they are comfortable with asap. -

Some kids have difficulty drawing model...If they have knowledge in algebra, they can work backward to derive the model...it is much easier...php:

when come to exam, if you can't solve the problem using heuristic approach, put your answer down in algebra and you will still get full marks if your have the correct answer. they can't mark you wrong... -

Tell that to him then but you know how stubborn children can be at times. Now that he learns abt all sorts of equations, he has thrown models out of his mind liao. Just the other day I was revising with my P3 boy MA and asked him to double check my workings, he went: huh? can use algebra? Some kids have difficulty drawing model...If they have knowledge in algebra, they can work backward to derive the model...it is much easier...

Wah.. I can barely keep up with reading this thread.. 12 pages in a day!! I have to say I am preparing myself to lower my expectations after reading all these posts.. My DS1 is only doing K2 stuff now as my focus is on getting his foundations and study methods right.. guess I should try to accelerate things abit..
At least you are now mentally prepared. Imagine some of us who were blur blur with our first child in this sch.
how did my DS1 attending primary sch become more stressful than work!?!?
Hats off to all the parents in this forum.. u guys are really 'specialized' in dedicated parents!!! :celebrate:
