GEP 2010 - Screening & Selection

Emelyn:
I have kids in both mainstream and GEP. Don't think they have any \"special\" privilege for GE kids. They are encouraged to apply for DSA. There are GE kids who did not apply for DSA and GE kids who applied and did not get any offers.Errm..... BUT they still have the \"special\" privileges to apply to these schools via DSA, right ? There is a special category for GEP students. And number of pple eligible for this category is much smaller than the other Sports, or Academic categories.... And if the GEPers score >80, only need to go for interviews.....
And if they can rejected, they can apply again using PSLE results, like the rest of the mainstream students.....
So, cannot deny that they have special privileges lah. Which is why a lot of parents sent their kids for prep classes so that they can be selected, right?
They need to do well, like mainstream kids to be considered. Also, getting avg of >80 is not easy feat, considering the difficulty level of their tests. Mainstream kids can apply for DSA as well. If they are rejected, can apply again using PSLE results too (which a lot of my DD's classmates did). -

I do also have kids in mainstream and GEP. It is all down to individual. I have friends' children who are in GEP and cannot make it to any of the top schools. One of the reason is complacency. Another reason I observe is their MT. A few of the GEP students score below 260 in their PSLE.

When they are all in the TOP schools, the mainstream will catch up with the GEPs. -

The mainstream will take about 6 to 9 months to adopt as the GEPs find the workload not more than what they did in their primary school. This is one advantage of GEPs over the mainstreams. -
think this is due to the fact that they have already cover some of the sec maths and sce concepts when they were in GEP.

My friend's son selected for oct test n she was shocked as her son result is so so.... & in last class.blur-daddy:
Base on my understanding one year back, the top student in my DS1 P3 level didn't get selected for GEP... so the selection criteria are somewhat different and not transparent...
I wonder how they assess.
My P3 was telling me that one of her classmates was selected for 1st test. However, this child's result is so so, so they are surprised. On the other hand, the top in her class didn't make it.
I was like.... err... maybe the top in class are not gifted but they are hardworking
Another friend whose child is in learning lab for English, math n science, in top class in a competitive school was shocked cos her girl did not get selected for selection test..n still wondering why....
If we can predict what will happens, we will be rich :celebrate: -
blur-daddy:
I love this ! But I cannot help myself - tell your ds -Again, with respect to PSLE and tests/exam, DS1 strongly drilled into me that it stands for -

We are not sure about which school to choose. We live in Yishun. I believe the nearest schools are Rosyth and then Raffles.
Is anybody from Yishun who have kids stuyding in these schools. Can share your experience.
My wife is not that much willing to send daughter away to a school so far.
