All About Kids' Eye-sight

Hi HappyAvon, thanks for the info. i agree with you if the myopia is constantly increasing at a alarmingly figure, then must seriously considering using eyedrops. Otherwise, high myopia can result in related eye problems which cause blindness. Then that is the end of it.
HappyAvon:
Hi Barney, she will be due for her next eye review in November....according to the doctor, she will need to assess further before deciding to put her on adopine eye drop which can help to slow down the progression.doctors in kKh n SNEC will not recommend ortho k due the the risk of eye/cornea infections from the contact Lens....however doctor did advise that with the administration of eye drop, special spectacle must be made...the spec must come with progressive lens n transition lens....since eye drops will relax the eye muscles, the eyes will be sensitive to sunlight....and if I can remember the longest they will put the child on eye drop will be 2 years....we will need to wait for her next review for the doctor's advise....
Currently, what we do is limit her tv programme n wii games...wii game is only allowed once a week/fortnight....when she is reading, we ensure she is reading with the correct lighting.... More outdoor for her eyes to see far distance.... -

Anyone try Ortho-K with Mee Mee Optics? Can share your feedback please?
I am staying in the west and check this forum for the recommended Ortho-k providers, looks like they are the only one nearby.
thanks
Sadly, my kid is myopic too and just visited the optometrist for Ortho-K last night. Although this is expected since both parents are myopic, nonetheless my heart ached when diagnosed with it. We went to Point Optical (Andrew person recommended on this forum). He travels to various branches and there's branches in Clementi Central and Yew Tee station. You may want to try out. I have also visited Mee Mee but didn't feel comfortable with the fact that the optometrists that we met are all young poly grads with only a few months of experience...... -
hi, how old is your kid and how much is the power? If it is just diagnosed, maybe should consider monitoring the increase first? why are you exploring Ortho-K len?

Hi All
I do share your worry over such matters, seeing kids wearing glasses so young of age. I do believe a balance nutrional diet can help to slow down the degration process, however the major problems aer we do not have enough time to prepare all the necesaary food, and most kids are vary choosey, like mine. i do some personnel studies on nutritional supplements, and learn how many \"illness\" can infact be prevented. I found a book on the web, hope it can help you all.

My son also have the same problem and was advised to use altropine eyedropped. I cannot make up my mind as there are so many side effect. For long term usage, what will happen as I understand that the eye drop is quite strong. The eye specialist dun advise of using ortha K lens as it will not help to maintain the power. Don't know what is the best for my boy. Any advise?
Hi, my son was on atropine since Feb this year.usaik:
anyone try the altropine eyedropped method for children ?
Does it work?
His eye sight was deterioriating every 3-6 months. It was finally under controlled since we started him on atropine this year. He is still on the eye drops. So far so good **keeping fingers crossed** Next visit to the Dr will be in Sep.
Help!!!
Just to share my experience, ds was first diagnosed to have myopia mid of last year. We first tried the eye resting guideline and nutrition method, but his condition continue to worsen.
Then we move on to explore the Oklens option. As ds has sensitive and watery eyes, his condition does not permit him to proceed with this option.
Although I heard of Atropine treatment then, due to my lack of information, we didn’t embark on it.
The stringent eye resting guideline which we imposed on ds just got stricter every time his myopia condition got worse. Not only that the resting rules didn’t help in controlling his eye sight, it was also affecting ds’s quality of life. The eye resting rules was disruptive to his school homework time and robbing all his pleasures of book reading.
As ds‘s eye-sight had deteriorated at such alarming rate that we had to take some bold decision early this year. Looking back, I wished I took that step earlier.
Ds has been on atropine for 10 months now. His last visit to the eye specialist was just a couple of days ago. We were extremely pleased that his myopia was completely under controlled. His degree has not increased since late Feb this year.
With regards to your concern on side effects,
(1)\tDs experienced some sensitivity to lights. However he got adapted to it relatively easily with the help of transition lens. Being extremely kiasu, we initially got him a pair of progressive cum transition lens. He didn’t like the progressive lens. Instead, he prefer to take off his glasses whenever he need to do near eye work. We later got him another pair – with just the transition function and less the progressive features (it’s cheaper and he’s happier).
(2)\tDs also experienced some stinging feeling during the administration of atropine. He doesn't like it but has gotten used to it.
So far, the above are the only 2 problems ds experienced.
I would like to add that : -
(1)\tBased on the rate on how ds eyesight was deteriorating last year till Feb this year, his myopia would probably worsen by another 250-400 degree by now and still worsening if he did not embark on the atropine programme.
(2)\tSince the programme, ds’s quality of life will has improved. Our stringent eye resting rules has since been relaxed slightly with every visit to the clinic. He is now allowed to do his school homework if there is any in the evening when he was not able to complete in the day. His reading time is more pleasurable without being disrupted so frequently. During SA2 this year, with eye resting rules less stringent, he was also able to focus better and make an easier and relaxing preparation for his exam. -

1) Both DH and I are highly myopic and so she is likely to one too. There's increased risk of eye problem eg detached retina etc
2) Was told that she doesn't need glasses if degree is less than 300, after that need to wear glasses. So might as well start early since we know it is likely to go up.
3) Likes to dance and swim so would be easier not to wear glasses.
Was happy for a few days when she can see clearly on the whiteboard after embarking on the program. But now worry again when I went for my regular eye checkup with a specialist who does not encourage this program and warned of side effects in long term. Wonder if I have made the right choice after all......
Has anyone did a comparison between Ortho-K and Atropine? Can share? -
Hi all
DS was referred to Refraction Clinic at Geylang Polyclinic earlier this year during the yearly check by Health Promotion Board in his child care centre. He is in K2 this year. The check diagnosed him as mildly short sighted and hence, I further brought him to an optical shop where glasses were prescribed only if he is doing near work.
Am I right that there is a need to do a review every 3 or 6 months to check if the myopia has deteriorated? Where can I bring him to for a review? I am hoping to try elsewhere other than the optical shop we went to as somehow, the reading taken at the shop was alot higher than the Refraction Clinic. I am not sure if its because his myopia is really bad or it has got to do with taking readings at different times of the day.
DS is quite active, I did bring him to another optical shop to do reading last month and he was quite restless till the staff suggested I bring him to a pediatric eye clinic instead for more accurate reading.
Not too sure where can I bring him to now? Can anyone advise?
Thanks! -

Hi, i was told that for children less than 8 years is better to see a eye doctor. For your case, what is the recent prescription as compared to earlier this year? i think it will not be accurate given that your DS was restless.Hi all

Hi Barney8, the recent prescription was definitely incorrect. That's why I am trying to find another place to review his myopia reading. I called a few places like SNEC and KK Eye Center, consultation alone is at least $70 and above?
