Ok, got it. Thanks. Just wondering, why don't the sch make the water murkier by randomly placing the top 4 classes across the spectrum of classes for each level. For eg, top classes maybe Teamwork 2,6,11,12 & the rest just fill in the blanks. For Respect it could be Respect 1,3,6,10 etc.
The top four classes will be assigned the numbers, may or may not be sequential, but it should be the bigger numbers, eg. Respect 10 and Respect 11 for the top 80.markfch:
I don't understand how did you derived that? You mean Teamwork 11-12 will be the best classes followed by Teamwork 9,10 & so on?
Can someone explain, thanks.
Basic human psychology you know. Take away the incentive (of being identified as the top or bottom classes) and the pressure to perform will be gradually reduced.
Btw less pressure does not equate to less performance. In fact, the opposite maybe true. Everyone has a 'pressure' threshold. Trip it and we may see diminished accomplishment. -

Good idea. They could possibly do that too. Why not you show up at the dialogue session on Monday and suggest that? I am serious. -

You mummies brought up very valid points. As a parent, first thing I see is from my own angle. Anything that reduces my stress level is always welcomed. But the other stakeholders may have contrasting concerns. For students, some of their concerns are as stated above.
Yeah Jennifer U R Right.Jennifer:
If ytd's dialogue is implemented and in future every class has avg 40 pupils, then aren't the needs of these weaker pupils even harder to take care of?
If these weaker pupils are identified and sent for compulsory remedial lessons, then will the issue of low confidence level still prevail? Imagine in the past, whole class has remedial, now only a few in the class are called up.
Based on the old system, the weaker classes can hv its top 3 classmates going on stage to collect awards. But under the supposed new system, no more hopes.
I hope the principal also has some plans to help the weaker pupils, not just concealing them among the cohort.
Believe when the Classes were 1st banded together in Charity, Faith, ....., Patience, Wisdom in the OLD Days - It was meant to save the Trouble to organise Remedial Class for the Weaker Students / Supplementary Class for the Stronger Students.
The Whole Class (be it Weaker or Stronger Class) is taught and Progress together - Less Logistic Problem ....
with New System, Guess Parents Must be Prepared for More After-school Remedial Classes for Weaker students ....
Current Charity, etc Class System Give Chance to Students in Weaker Class to be Recognised and Go On Stage at Year End to Collect REWARDS.
My Eldest Boy, in Patience, in Years Gone by, Got ONE chance Last Time - Results Passable, 2nd in \"PATIENCE\" class, Still Got Chance to Go on stage ....
Now under New System, No Chance Liao ....
The other impt party is the teachers. And I suspect that not all will like it cos I think the new structure extracts more effort from them. No longer one size fits all, now teaching has to be more granular even within each class itself. But one good side effect (for P at least) is that it makes the grading of teaching staff more objective since calibre of students will be more evenly spread out. -

Apparently, the CURRENT way banded kids into the top three classes (Ch, Fa, Gr) based on level positions. The remaining kids were S-banded all the way and placed in Hope to Wisdom. A parent, who has a child in Wisdom, vouched for that last evening cos her son's P1 level position last year was less than 160th, yet he was placed in Wisdom. I think we had a preconceived idea all this while that the kids were allocated classes based on level positions 1st to 360th and that since the best class is Charity, so the worst must be Wisdom. The kids thought that way too, that's why it \"shocked\" the P to know that the child was ashamed to tell her class was Patience.
Frankly, I was a little doubtful still, cos a kid I know who was in Wisdom 2 last year is really quite poor in her studies. Could she be coincidentally S-banded into that class? -

P will tell me, 'mai kancheong, your ds not even p1 yet you got so many things to say oredi.'
But since you think it's a good idea, I'll find a way to reflect this to her.

Hmm...unless you are like php, very popular in school, then she'll know who you are, if not, can sneek in lah. Hehe. Actually, you are concerned about the outcome, so I don't see anything wrong with going.

In other words, what you're saying is that other then for the top 4 classes, this latest initiative is actually no diff from the old way. This drastically reduced the 'drama' for all involved.Funx3:

Still I harbour the same doubts as you. Because if it's an issue with communication (people mistaken that Wisdom is worst class), then wouldn't the sch address it via the comms channel rather than going thru all these re-structuring? It's a bit like I only have a hammer in my toolbox, so I only have one soln to every problem. -
markfch:
Something like that, except for a small diff. They will S-band the top 80 into 2 classes, and then the next 80 into another 2 classes.

I guess this preconceived idea has already been ingrained in most people's minds so that's y needs a revamp of the class allocation system. As for having only one soln, my dh said there is actually no permanent or perfect solution to this.Still I harbour the same doubts as you. my point of view is that the school is implementing the \"collage\" class approach but they are still safeguarding the top 4 classes. there will still be fierce competition among the 4 classes esp the top 2 classes.

as for the rest of classes, it will take time to see as to whether the weaker students have benefited from this arrangement. -
