Hi Super P, how many out of how many of their trainees got plat and gold last year from ALC. How much do they charge per hour? How effective is the DSA training to most participants? It seems that they mainly selemct those Maths Olympiad winners who seem to have a higher chance in their DSA for the DSA preparation class. What is their track record like?

My son was lucky and got a Platinum last year after trained by ALC. I was quite impressed and followed up to let him attend the DSA course. The centre prepared him with GAT, interview and boosted his confidence and motivation. To my surprise, he managed to secure DSA offers from several top IP schools. Anyone who gets a Platinum in the Maths Olympiad is almost guaranteed a chance in the IP schools through DSA. This is the type of \"talent\" they are looking for, to help the school win more awards in the years to come. And also, these schools have the resources to further develop and nurture these talents.

So now we know why most of those Olympiad winners (in Sec, you have Physics, Maths, Chem, Infocomm etc) come from the few IP schools.

The team to represent Singapore in the International Math Olympics this year has just been chosen. There are 6 of them. 4 from RI JC and 2 from NUS High.

1 of the NUS High student chosen is only in sec 2 this year. He had a platinum but came from a non GEP neighbourhood primary school and got into NUS High thru DSA.

At only sec 2 and being able to compete at the JC level, he will be able to bring more awards for the school in the next 5 years.

Do not be discourage by schools only selecting award winners, etc. My son is not an GEP student and also not an award winner (not even a bronze) but he went thru the DSA for Maths in the top school last year. Go on and let your child has a chance to fulfill his dream. He will be motivate to do well if he wants to go to the school.

Thanks Jenn for the insight. You are so right, i am not too keen on NUS High as I have yet to see the actual result from the pioneer batch of students. I guess only the good students will get to NUS or other good Uni but what abt the average one????
Anyway, I will prepare my child not to put too much hope on DSA but to concentrate on the actual PSLE. THANKS again.

For those keen on NUS High but not sure on the kind of universities their graduates can get into - NUS High has provided a listing on their website of the universities that have made offers to their pioneer batch of graduates and the number of offers made by each of these universities.

Yes, I am curious to know more too. My son from mainstream had a bronze but did not get pas the first round during the DSA. He got in via his PSLE results. Overall we felt the mainstream pupils seem to be disadvantaged in the DSA exercise.

The first test he went was with HCI and he did not get any offer. He has the HCI result before he went for the test with RI. His GAT test which was taken in HCI was excellent. we have given out hopes when he received a call from RI for the Mathematic selection test. He went thru it and get the offer from RI. We are all surprise too. My son maths' result is above 95% from P4 to P6. He has an average of 85% for his P4 to P6 exams. He is not the top 10 students in his primary school.

I hope this can motivate the parents to try DSA if your child is consistent with their results. Do not get worry if your kids do not have any awards. Good luck and do let me know if you need any help.
