GEP 2010 - Screening & Selection
-
Hi, yes... the trend is there... more boys than gals... in my DS1 class, it is like 3 boys to 1 gals... I suppose this got to do with boys being stronger in logical thinking e.g. Logical-Mathematical, while gals being stronger in linguistic intelligence. hahaha... MI... and given GEP focus on GA and maths, on top of english... so boys may fair slightly better.
As for reading, agreed. It is very important to expose them and let them pick up the reading habit. As the chinese proverb \"Give a kid a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach the kid to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”.
We try to do the same thing about electronic device but failed miserably... xbox game is one of my key bonding sessions with my kids.

I am also wondering about the GEP boys to girls ratio myself.comfy:
Sometimes I think there is a certain no. of boys and girls to be selected each yr for GEP but the GEP department say no. Imagine if there happen to have 90% selected are boys then who are going to fill up the places in RGPS. Hee..Hee... or vise versa no gep stds in CH and ACS. That will be disaster, right? So, your ds could have been selected if there are no such restriction. This is just a thought.
You see, during the GEP Parents Briefing which I attended, the Head of MOE GEP Branch announced that the ratio of the gender for the selected batch of GEP students was 1 girl to 1.9 boys.
I have spoken to several friends who have children selected for GEP in different years before my dd and the ratio is coincidently 1 girl to 2 boys.
Do you suppose that there is some kind of trend here? :? -
But why the ratio is almost the same each year??? :? To me, 1 girl to 1.9 boys is not much difference from 1 girl to 2 boys.
Find it difficult to believe that the ratio is about there every year. Even if it means that more boys are selected for GEP, think it will be more credible that the ratio varies each year (e.g. 1 girl to 3 boys), right?
I remember that when the annoucement was made during the GEP Parents Briefing regarding the GEP girls to boys ratio, there was quite a commotion amongst the parents. I looked around and caught a few parents looking at each other with that 'I told you so' smile. Seems like it is a known fact that the ratio of GEP girls to boys will hover about this ratio.
Btw, since the GEP Parents Briefing is last Saturday, did the Head of GEP Branch make any indication of the ratio of GEP girls to boys this year?

Well, I just faxed over the form for the GEP School. Really feel release after doing it.
Just now, spent almost a hour to surf through the last year GEP forum, very interested. Also noticed that nobody chose TNS and SHPS for the last year GEP. Would like to following them. List out all the 9 schools and see who selected which school.

This year the ratio is roughly about the same. Slightly more girls , so that why I think there is high chance of fixing a prefer no. boys and girls. I think the no of girls selected for GEP is going up gradually slowly (good sign).Perhaps more girls being exposed to more challenging math and IQ books. Parents with DD are also KS mah. If the population that year, have more girls than boys and the rstio still remain the same, you know perhaps we might right. But why the ratio is almost the same each year??? :? To me, 1 girl to 1.9 boys is not much difference from 1 girl to 2 boys.

Hi thmejlfm,
my 1st choice is also Tao Nan followed by Rosyth. I don have other choices as the rest of the schools are either too far or not offering chinese orchestra as CCA.thmejlfm:
