sorry, i know a bit off topic here but any idea where those GEPers end up when they grow up? always in the top echelon of society?

They may do very well in life since their qualifications are quite good but it depends on the person itself to decide where they want to go and what they would like to do in life.
However, yes, most GEP students do well in life cos it seems that they are more talented in academics then other students, especially in maths and science i think.

My daughter is interested to pick up a 3rd language (she is offered to take up) but she is still not sure at this moment whether she should pick up Japanese or French as the third language. Which is more useful, easy to master and selected by most students as 3rd language? Any advice?

... my daughter is better in English language than Chinese and she prefers a mixed cultural environment.

My advice would be that she should take up French. It seems likely that if you are better in English, French will be easier to handle; after all, much of modern English is related to French, historically. Japanese is easy to extract meaning from or relate to if you are good with Chinese.

However Japanese is a less useful language and likely to become even less so in the years ahead as Japan ages and becomes less influential. French is likely to remain useable throughout areas in the EU, and academically, in the humanities.

In terms of cultural exposure, French still has a legacy as a diplomatic language and a language of philosophy and literature. There are French companies worldwide too, and it is easier to join one and work for one.

But after all that, it all boils down to what your daughter thinks. You might want to visit the Alliance Francaise at 1 Sarkies Road (near Newton MRT). 🙂

Thank you autolycus, Zeemimi, Pecalis, Sall and Zann for all your advice.

Zann, do you mean I can put Japanese as the 1st choice and French as the 2nd choice or vice versa? Sorry if I misunderstood your message. According to the instructions on the SI form, I can only choose ONE language code from each category. Japanese and French are in the same category. My daughter is not interested in Malay/Indonesia. So looks like I can only put one choice in the S1 form, am I right?

yup, i understand Maris Stella is a SAP school. however, looking through the CCA of Chung Cheng (Main), there's alot of activities that are Chinese related. Maris Stella offer something different.

my son score A for his CL2 (to me it is a miracle as he always fail his CL2 Paper 2). my son has to buck up his Chinese and he has promised he will try (he has done that for his PSLE)

my son's form teacher just called to remind to submit the Application. i have told her the choices and same question as you have mentioned - Maris Stella is a SAP school. same thing i have told her and she think if my son do not \"switch off\" - not paying attention, he should be fine.

as for the last choice, i don't know what to put after going through the list many times and decided on Xinmin. any suggestion?
If that is the case, then I would say let's leave the choices as they are. Chances of him getting in Maris Stella is quite high if you have already taken into account the SAP status.

For the 6th choice, I don't know where you are located, but based on your choices, I would think you are somewhere in the North East area. Not sure how convenient Ngee Ann and Dunman Sec is to you, but they sound more logical than XM as a last choice, but that said, considering that you have made quite good choices for 1st to 5th choices, it is quite unlikely for your to be posted to your 6th choice school so you may want to leave it as it it, of course, knowing very well that it's sort of wasting that choice by putting XM as the 6th choice. It's all up to you, as I think your chances of getting in MS is quite high.

Today is last day to submit the secondary school choices.

My dd’s t-score is 223 and CCA is International dance.

We have decided to submit the followings:
1. Gan Eng Seng (222)
2. Mayflower (222)
3. Hua Yi (221)
4. Bowen (221)
5. Peirce (208)
6. Kent Ridge (193)

Consideration is score, location and CCA. Really really wants to get into Gan Eng Seng due to location - so she can concentrate learning and aim for JC on her 3rd year.

What do you parent thinks of her likelyhood of not getting into Gan Eng Seng? Should I be worried and prepared to appeal?

Good luck to all and wish we all get the school that our children are aiming for!

Since your daughter’s t-score is 223 and gan eng seng’s 2009 COP was 222 (and the COP is supposed to drop this year), she should have a good chance of getting in.

Hi all.

Been scratching my head....

We are not sure we shd put Catholic High(COP 248) or
Victoria(COP 245) as first choice.

My son prefer Victoria. His T-score is 247.

But if I put Victoria as first choice and Catholic as sec, it does not make sense since Victoria COP is lower than Catholic.

If i put Catholic as first choice and if he is selected it will not do good
if we appeal for Victoria.

Any advice?
TIA

If he prefers Victoria, then just choose Victoria as 1st choice - should be able to get in VS 🙂

Yes, but not sure about Catholic as second choice.

tks.

HI all

After several posts in various threads, lots of stress and tears (literally), this is the final list for my son who scored 255 +2:

1st choice: RI (almost zero chance, but filling it in juz to try our luck) (259 COP)
2nd choice: HCI (COP 257)
3rd choice: NJC (COP 257)
4th choice: RVHS (COP 251)
5th choice: CHS (COP 248)
6th choice: VS (COP 245)

just want to confirm that, if he can’t get into any of the first three, he can at least get into RV or if RV is also out, he can still get CHS.

thks v much.
advice from anyone?

Since your DD's score is close to St Nics COP last year, there is a risk. But no harm putting it as first choice, since posting is by merit. But I think you have to exercise your choice for 3rd and 4th school carefully also. Cedar COP is 246 last year, not sure if it will increase this year.

I'm making a gut-feeling guess that Cedar's COP will be higher than St Nick this year. If you can't make it to 1st choice, likely can't make it to 2nd choice either.

Bear in mind St Nick has affiliation to pri sch. So if St Nick pri cohort has done well this year and most of them are staying, fewer places are available for non-affiliate.

yes agree with lizawa your 3rd and 4th choice very impt.
thank you very much for your advise. submitted already, keep my finger cross and hope she can get in, prepared to appeal.
