All About Math Olympiad Training & Questions

Not sure if the figures are published. I heard from parents of different GEP cohorts about the ratio (2:1) before I attended the GEP briefing last year. During the briefing, the breakdown was disclosed and as expected was very close to that ratio mentioned. When I spoke to my child's paediatrician, whose boy was previously from the programme (in late 80s/early 90s) as well, he mentioned about the ratio too. His reasoning was that boys in general are better at tackling logical/IQ/Maths/general abilities questions. Hence, you see more boys than girls in these programmes.

The ratio might not be due just to IQ type questions. Has it occured to anyone that it might also have to do with government policies of wanting more boys in GEP. Social engineering, just like how they have quotas for the number of boys and girls in Medicine in University.

This is an interesting thought too... Based on probability, by right the top 15 children should consist more boys than girls but statistically, it has often been more girls than boys.

My 2 sons will be in K1 and P1 next year…the fees at Math Olympiad is expensive…is it worth it ,if I enrol them there ?

I dont really think the fees at maths olympiad are that expensive. Mind quoting some prices? Unless you are going for 1 to 1 training which can be quite expensive.

I feel that as long as your child dont lose confidence in maths, it is way better to go for olympiad classes as the questions are more interesting.

School syllabuses are also moving towards olympiad-type level.

can share where you get the news? I was at the prize presentation ceremony and noted that tao nan did not win any of the top 20 positions. mostly won by nanyang pri.

Talking about biceps, maybe you know this girl in your boy class.W.X.Heard this year, there is this boy hit perfect score for math in sa1.

glad my reply helps you see things in a diff light. with piano, dance etc kids who are really talented would find them enjoyable, relaxing and would not dread the daily practice. Ditto for maths for someone who truly enjoys them.

My daughter is ok with mainstream maths but not competitive type. But there's some truth to the saying that maths geeks tend to be boys. My son's class has only 4 girls 14 boys while the bicep class (for those who're excellent in chinese) has lots more girls than boys. It could mean also that girls are better at languages.
