That is young..maybe can start with flashcards? I read in bud's blog before on her methods to help her girls read..I thought it was very good..maybe you can get some tips there before formally letting your DD go for classes?[/quote]Haha did try a few times and she will snatched the flashcards from me and either put in her mouth or fold it.
Oops....typo mistake should be DDMrs Ang:

i started #1 (gil)on flashcards when 2 yrs wked well. started with # (girl) ard 2 yrs. also well wked. for #3 started only when 3.5yrs. kept forcing. it eventually wked out tho its forcing mtd. forcing as in i told him: u cant go off n play until u learnt ur cards.
to me, its attittude problem for my boy. -
As a phonics teacher myself, I see the importance of it and it sorts of gradually pathing young children from:-
1. recognising the alphabetical phonics sound
2. blending the letters together to form a string of new words (dipthong/digraph/blends/prefix/suffix/word families etc come in) and picking up spellings and correct pronunciation with breeze
3. Appreciating language whether spoken or written
4. Loving reading as a result
When the child knows how to tackle difficult words by breaking it up from their phonics knowledge, they become more confident and challenge themselves by reading up tougher books. Of course, the way lesson is conducted is crucial. Supplement with play, games, activities...learning phonics can be fun! I always believe that learning needs moving ard and I dislike the traditional chalk and board concept.
I've another Pri kids who totally has no phonics background before. Not that her English is bad or she can't speak properly but I find the thing lacking is that she doesn't appreciate and love English/reading and tend to give up easily when she can't u/s the words. That strikes the difference.
Young children can be taught and nurtured, that's the beauty of it...so it's never late as long as you start somewhere.
Just for a share... :hugs: -
thanks. i know wat u mean.
my girl was taught phonics only in childcare. she loves to read as i read to her from young.
my boy, i hv less time to read to him plus he is active by nature. he also taught phonics in childcare. but he is not a born reader. will read if u sit wif him. but by default his mtd of reading is just enjoy the pics. -

It's the default programme for any kiddie la dearie.. Myself included.
It is how all children start out. How old is he again?
24hr-mum:
As all children are born different, it's almost impossible to have the one...for #3 started only when 3.5yrs. kept forcing. it eventually wked out tho its forcing mtd. forcing as in i told him : u cant go off n play until u learnt ur cards. to me, its attittude problem for my boy.
method fix all method. They will be receptive to different methods of
teaching and learning.
While my DD1 was the sit-down-concentrate type and receptive to the
Montessori Method, DD2 was more the active-i-dowanna-sit-neh-neh-
pooh-pooh type... so i had to adjust the method to suit her learning
style.
The main objective is how we get them interested to learn the concept
we're trying to teach, be it the reading process, early numeracy skills
and so on..
I believe that if at first you don't succeed try other ways. :hugs:
That said, of course... it wud definitely be easier if they can all learn the
same way. Save time, cost, time & energy.
Aniwaes, there are some games over these blue links if you are keen to
try them out, 24hrs-mum.

jasmineong:
Why not. My wife taught my DD phonics when she is 18 months and I have to learn from her too (prior to that I don't know about phonics) so that I can teach my DD
