I also wonder if my ds got dyscalculia. He's in p2 now. He takes forever to do mental calculations and anything more than 1 step, he will do wrong. I'm thinking of sending him to mpm or enopi or whatever to see if their program can help. maybe he need to start his foundation all over again. Also I'm trying to get him to improve his english to make sure that it will not be a liability.

how's the situation now? U might wava give kumon a try.

dear parents, if your child has been diligently doing all the math worksheet drills and assessments that you set for him/her, there is no reason why he/she can't perform well in exams. if he/she seems to forgets everything that has been revised before, then parents should really look into the possibility that the child may have a learning disorder term 'dyscalculia'. you may try http://www.dyscalculia.org for more info.

Is there anyone whose kid has problem with Maths? My friend's son(P4) is facing this problem. He can't really handle problem sums or have problem understanding them.He may be a slow learner as he needs the mum or tutor to explain to him a few times than he can understand or know how to do.He also can't remember them after a few days if the tutor ask him to do them again. He's a hardworking boy,he does alot of assessment and top sch papers too but just that he can't perform well in exams. He failed his P3 SA2 😢
              Hi,

I'm in the same boat. My girl have this problem. Did you manage to get any help? I understand from the article on Dyscalculia given the right treatment, the child will be able to excel in Maths. Can you give some advice. Thanks in advance!

                Hi,

I am a tutor and would like to share my teaching experience with you. I also face this problem when teaching some of my students.

Some of my students try to finish the exercise faster by skipping certain steps. If their foundation is very strong, they can do in this way to save the time but must make sure the important step must be written down to earn points. If not, they might be losing certain marks due to missing steps.

For those who weak in problem sum, try to use modelling to improve their understanding. Beside, when giving explanation, try to use the example close to their life style. This can help them link the problem to what they always do.

I hope that this information helps you all to solve your problem.

                    Hi Kitty2 & Celeste How,

Thanks for your replies. Next year my girl is sitting for her PSLE exam. I'm at my wits end. :? I have a few options and undecided. My options are Just Education, Raffles Edu Hub or engage a private tutor. From what I gathered results are guaranteed in Raffles Edu Hub. In Just Edu the school syallbus are well taught. I personally believe she needs a personal tutor who can teach her passionetly and patiently. In the past I have engaged a few private tutors but none worked for her.

My gal had never like Math since she was in Pri 1. However, her Math improved this year after the father started coaching her. Unfortunately, she failed by 2 marks for her SA2. We were puzzled because we had given her top schools exam papers to prepare her and she did not fail a single paper but made very good progress from each papers. Although, the form teacher highlighted thay had raised the standard for the final exam, I am sure my gal would have at make a pass.

Anyhow, my husband shared with me that my gal has no problem doing Math but has problem understanding Math. Especially the problem sums section. This is the area that she gets zero! Her problem is she's not able to understand the question or link them up. It is the same for her English. She is very good for her English paper but her comprehension would always be the section that pull her marks down. Reason being: she cannot remember what she has read, she doesn't capture the story, she didn't understand the passage. 😐

Any parents can assist where I can get help? I've requested for a 1-1 home tution for her. My criteria is the teacher has to be able to ignite interest or better still, make Math interesting for her. If anyone of you have recommendation for such tutor, let me know. Best if she can teach both Math & English.

                      Thanx in advance.
