Dunman High vs River Valley High

I remember we visited the open house for both DHS and RVHS in 2008. Then my dd's T-score was eligible for both DHS and RVHS. At that time, we did not look at the academic results of both schools, but more on her personal feelings towards both schools during the open house visit and also the distance. Both her feelings and distance were in favour of RV. Hence she choosed RV. During that year of open house, both schools were in the temporary campus. Hence the facilities were not taken into consideration. She was comparing her feel in terms of the first sight of the students, how helpful they were and their behaviour. Hope this helps.

I feel sad that people have low opinion of RV. My daughter is eligible for RGS or NYGHS, but we chose RV instead. Everyone who asked for her score n her choice of sch was shocked that I chose RV. They felt that she should choose an elite sch since she is sure to get a place there. Dunman high has higher COP, so in general, people feel that it is better than RV.

That will be what most people will look at, however, the number of A's and awards won in competitions. My opinion is that it may be an indication of the value-add of the school but factors such as the quality of students intake, consistency over a number of years and whether they have recruited \"foreign talents\" etc have to be taken into account. From my view, schools that send students to as many competitions as possible may be a better choice because these can be extra opportunities and exposure for the students to enrich themselves. I'll tend to see more value-added in that school. As for more than expected students scoring A's from their quality of student intake, I am also interested if it is due to the school culture or because they have better teachers etc... I believe the reason can be rather complex to sift through out with certainty.INNOVATE:
Just like its is difficult to compare HCI family with RI family on academic terms alone. If one wishes to compare strictly on academic area, than NGHS should be chosen over RGS and HCI over RI. Why then i see so many choosing the reverse?

In my view, even if we want to narrow the comparison to academic of 2 schools, it is quite meaningless to simply look at % of As or number of awards won at competitions. We have to ask ourselves whether such \"better results\" are due to better students intake (due to different COP) or due to the value-add from school. More importantly, we really have to ask ourselves, what such % really mean to our kid. If he is getting As and winning award, does it matter if his school has a lower % than another school? Reversely, if our kids are not getting As and not winning awards, so what their school has a higher % than another school?
In short, we know all these schools mentioned are good schools and that's more than enough. The rest is really up to each child. Not forgetting academic result is just one aspect of education. -

just done a search on MOE website. RV received the Sustained Achievement Award for Academic Value-Added for 2007 & 2008 (last O lvl cohort) while DHS has never got it. SAA is for 3 consecutive years of achievement. So RV already value adds her students since 2005. -

No need be sad, everyone has their own instint. Dd's pri sch was in the north and RV was not known to most of her pri sch mates. A few even made fun of her St John look like uniform when she first home visited pri sch with that uniform. -

Having said that, I have to acknowledge that RV is one rare school that has high COP (always higher than 250) and yet can still value-add (academic). -

:celebrate: relax, i don't want to offend anyone here. just sharing my experience. maybe dunman high offer holy-man education. but that's really not the main reason why my daughter goes to school. good a-level exam results after IP is more realistic. dunman high a-level exam results didn't tally with the 'we-have-one-president-scholar' campaign. it's just not enough to convince me. sorry. and given there are other schools to choose..
puzzle with yr sentence in bold, but we are yet to see RV \"A\" level results leh.....
for sec sch's selection, besides academics, there are still other factors to look for
1 am 1 parent (amongst others) who believes to look beyond the academics, otherwise my 1 st choice last yr would def be RGS.....ManU123:

but is impt is whether the school can produce an all-rounded student with good character, leadership, etc.. -
