That is being wise. It is the right move.My son has been streamed since the end of P1 and up till now, he is working hard to 'maintain'...not even striking goals. This is the standard in Pei Hwa.
Although daughter is going to another school, I still believe in applying same method of teaching for her next year...ie 1 hour of studying during school holidays to keep the brain working...not too much right ? I've got several friends asking me, 'What ?? School holidays still need to do assessment book? Why ?'
I've given up explaining there is a need to keep the brain working...maybe school culture is diff or maybe parents' mentality is diff. -
Jennifer:
Has anyone recd notification from the sch on which class the child is posted to next year?
I went to get the school books for my dd the other day and pop into office to ask. They said the FT will call EVERY parents on the classes after 15th Dec. -

Oh really? I was there on Thur. The admin advised that they were in the midst of sending out letter, by early next week, everyone should get it. Now...I am :?Jennifer:

One hour a day is very reasonable.Hi comfy,
No stress lah...one hour a day compared to his few hours playing.
To them, they just feel that holidays should be holidays...no work but just play. Won't the kids suffer when school reopens ? One hour of work (maybe less) followed by marking it and then explaining the mistakes to him...after that either play or go out. Where got stress ? -

There could be a perfectly good reason for the 2 different replies. They're not mutually exclusive so it could be a formal letter followed by a personal call by the FT to further elaborate on the sch's latest initiative. Many things are better explained verbally than in writing.Trapwithin:

Strange, my friends are just the opposite. Keep on asking me what assessment books I have bought and tried and what holiday classes to attend, what I am going to 'do' to my dd. Ha, maybe your friends feel the stress that you are going thru' and want you to relax. If I say I am just doing nothing this holiday, my friends would be :!:[/quote] Do you mean her friends feel the stress because Janet is doing it and it puts pressure on them to do likewise for their own children? So they kept asking Janet to relax for fear of \"losing out\" to her?
Yeah, we have been going to places on weekends and bringing the kids out for waffles, ice cream etc.janet_lee88:

Hi,Janet,
You are not alone in thinking like this. I think it is good to do some revision or learn something new (new academic topis) during the holiday. Like you said to keep the brain ticking/working. Infact, I think it is good as the child can learn at her pace and also let her think that that it is normal to learn. Of course, try to make the learning as enjoyable and relax as possible. (by giving stars award, lots of praises and her choices of outing)
Son's teacher asked me to get him to read up his P3/4 Science before P5 starts. It's just so ridiculous that these 2 friends feel that assessment books during holidays are a no-no and keep emphasizing it.

I know it sounds rather snobbish to say this…but Pei Hwa isn’t a school which allows complete holiday…all fun and no work. When kids go back to school, they will suffer bcos their brains are still in ‘holiday mode’…and this applies to me too.
I gear up 2 weeks before new school year starts by reading up the new textbooks, so I know what is going to be taught.
You know, I still get messages posted on my FB wall telling me to forget about the assessment book and just let them play. Why is it these people are so demanding to insist that HOLIDAYS MEANS NO WORK ?
Although my daughter may not be going to Pei Hwa next year, I still want to build up her foundation at P1/2. -
can anybody advise whether P2’s My Word Bank Book is similar to the one used in P1?

Yes. Both My Word Bank book and the Grammar Handbook were used for P1 and P2. No longer found in the P3 Booklist.
