It is a small 3G mobile device. Yes, you would need to subscribe to a telco mobile data plan and insert the sim card into this router.

It allow up to 5 devices; like iPad, notebook, etc, to simultaneously connect to it and share the mobile broadband.

Same concept with iphone, the generation does not matters, what really consumer care is whether can run their fav game in the ipad/ipad2. Of course, ipad2 will be faster and energy saving compare to their 1st gen!
