you mean \"should NOT even accept other offers and wait for the S1 posting exercise. For those that already accepted their dsa postings to other schools should honour their undertakings rather than trying for the supplementary dsa even if their PSLE T-score is within RI cop.
The above situation creates uneccessary hazzle for other schools. Anw, RI must hve their reasons for rejecting their dsas. It is also an area of concern as it shows that the pupils may not be cut out to excel in a very competitive enviroment.
In the first place, those who are pretty confident of their academic prowess should even accept other offers and wait for the S1 posting excercise.
sometime even for academically very capable students, they won't know whether they will fall sick during PSLE time or have injury during PSLE time which will affect their real performance at PSLE. Hence it is more prudent to accept the DSA offers first and set the mind free with less pressure and thus could even perform better without pressure.
I totally agree with your view point; and many forum members can testify I would be the first to jump at anyone who does not honour the DSA commitment.
My viewpoint has since changed after talking to a number of principals on this matter. They (the sec school principals) have an understanding amongst themselves to facilitate the movement of students post-DSA commitment, such that they could know the vacancies arising asap, in order to make the offers to those waiting for their respective appeals. It has been an annual practice and they see it as part of normal work process, year in year out, updating the respective schools on withdrawals/vacancies and the MOE on the movement. The ripple effect on schools is unavoidable but they want the students who aspire to join them by all means possible -

Tks for your response.
On your first pt, the culmination of our educational system lies in adademically inclined students attempting the A-level. As such, scholarship applications and entrance rely on this factor. A student has only one bullet in his/her attempt. Sadly, instituitions do not consider whether an highly capable student was sick during the exam. Therefore, we as parents have to make health and mental conditioning in preparing our kids for the uni entrance exam. Taking PSLE is the first hurdle in such demanding enviroment.
Regarding your second pt, the fact that MOE has abolished the practice of allowing 0-level grads to base their prelims results for admission to jcs is a strong valid pt to support my argument. Statistical records showed that up to 50% of students transferred out to different jcs after the joint admission excercise. Too much paper work is involved.
Further, i question the wisdom of a high ability pupil especially one who is receiving tution of his chances of being a valuable student in RI vs other good schools. Is an uphill battle for him vs the top 20% of RI cohort. Those gentlemen that were crowned as President and SAF Overseas scholars in recent yrs are testimonies that are very good schools are as capable in producing and nuturing top talents.
All in all i hve based my conclusion on the basis of experience. -
My son got accepted to RI on the basis of his T Score of 266. He had DSA ed but even though he got through the GAT with a fractured right arm, he did not clear his Math Domain test. He was ofcourse disappointed, but we advised him to give his best in PSLE and try again. We are glad that he persevered as he had only RI in his mind and had DSA ed only there.
Those who already have DSA offers from RI, any idea of the booklist and specifically, the literature book that will be followed in 2011? Will it be different from this year’s ?
TIA. -

I do agree that those students who have tutions for their primary school will find it hard in RI or any IP Schools. The curriculum is different and it is very difficult to find tution or enrichment schools who follow the IP curriculum. Normal tution will not help much. Different IP Schools also have different methods of teaching and evaluations. It make external tution or enrichment irrevelant to their schools curriculum and evaluations.verykiasu2010

Registration was a cinch today thanks to all the helpful advice given here about preordering of books n when n where to buy uniforms and PE attire. There were 3 separate areas for books, uniforms n PE attire with long queues in each place. All we had to do was pick up his preordered books- no queue at all. Many thanks for all the kind tips n merry Christmas!
