The drop out rate for 3rd lang is rather high. It's great if you're good in the language and can use it to substitute for one of your weaker subjects in the computation of your GPA. But if it's a struggle then maybe not. Quite a few drop out after Term 1 and even more at the end of Year 1. I guess it boils down to your dd's time management and how involved she is in her CCA. Some CCAs meet at least 3x a week and more intensely during competition time.

Most of the time, students drop out of third lang because of tired of travelling(because it ends rather late), or tired of commitment(because you have other stuff in sch eg CCA).

As Jtoh has said, if you're strong in the 3rd language you take, it will help to pull your GPA up, in addition to putting you in an advantage over many other people because of your knowledge of a 3rd language. French for example is very useful because it is widely used in quite a number of countries.

My advice as a student who used to -but has dropped out of third lang- is to take the 3rd language and see what happens. it doesnt hurt to try. Especially with the new GPA computation system, even if your 3rd language itself is not good, it will not drag your GPA down.

You can always quit if you want to, either in June or December.(mid year/end of year)

The most important thing is to take the chance of learning a new language, a new culture, a new perspective.

Sec1 is the best year to try out new things.

Shooting is a core CCA. If selected, you'll be doing either Air Pistol or Air Rifle. You'll have to attend the selection trials for it which will be conducted during CCA trials week. Make sure you sign up for the trials and you'll be informed of the dates for the trials. Competition is intense during the trials.

I hope you can understand my concerns as a parent - I really want her to enjoy these crucial formative years. I was from ACS in the 80s and those were my best years of my life!! The intense competition preparation against the RIs, RGS will always be some of the sweetest memories together with the teachers i had!!

Generally, the feedback from the girls is that the teachers are approachable and caring. Of course there is the odd teacher here and there but they're only human after all. I had a friend's dd whose grades were not very good and the teacher gave her special attention to guide her along. It was something that was much appreciated by my friend and her dd.

guess, i wasn't that lucky to meet the caring and approachable ones.

when we ( me, hub and gal) were at the sch last year during the \"tea session with the Principal\",
i asked one of the teachers there (to be exact, there are 2 teachers present)
my Q was, \" i was told that it is very stressful in this school\"
and her reply was , \" Tell me which IP schools is not stressful ??
she continued somthing like if the pupil finds it stressful, then she is not geared towards IP..........
i was kinda of dumbfounded. :!:

DD got offer of 3rd lang - French. When go to RGS on 23.12 understood that for 2011 student only can chose 1 special prg. Can she still try to apply MEP? or SAP? Then only decide what to sign up?

If you're not sure, call the school and ask. They'll be willing to clear your doubts.

Wtv the case is, it's up to you whether you can cope with whichever special programmes you take. The school will prefer you not to cancel your application IF you happen to be selected.

Thanks fatal-illuxions, try to call RGS on 24.12, but nobody answer(guess is a christmas eve). Will let DD try MEP on 27.12.

Hi Augmum,

Thank you so much for your input. By the way, is your daughter there eventually. If not, where did she go to ? Essentially, it has be the best years of her life so I do hope she meets the right ones. With all the CCA coimmitments, I would imagine that tuition would be diffifcult so I am currently weighing all these matters.
