Hi,

Does anyone know if Odyssey of the Mind is considered to be a core CCA?
My DD was a school mid distance runner but she did not win any thing so can anyone advise me whether she should try going for the track and field? What about clubs such as science and LDDS?

No, OM is not considered a CCA. Your dd should try out for track and field. CCA trials will be held in the first couple of weeks of school after Orientation Week. There is English Drama as CCA. Auditions are quite intense too I hear.

Your dd should go around to all the exhibitions during CCA Orientation Day and see what CCAs are available at RGS. There are LOTS. You can watch performances by the performing arts groups, demonstrations by some of the sports CCAs and even try your hand at some sports you've never tried before.

The fun part about CCA selection week is to go for all the trials and auditions of CCAs you're interested in. Remember that in secondary school, the CCA chooses you, not you choosing the CCA. If you don't go for trials, you won't be selected, and you might end up in the not-very-popular CCAs (aka uniformed groups).

The drop out rate for 3rd lang is rather high. It's great if you're good in the language and can use it to substitute for one of your weaker subjects in the computation of your GPA. But if it's a struggle then maybe not. Quite a few drop out after Term 1 and even more at the end of Year 1. I guess it boils down to your dd's time management and how involved she is in her CCA. Some CCAs meet at least 3x a week and more intensely during competition time.

DD got offer of 3rd lang - French. When go to RGS on 23.12 understood that for 2011 student only can chose 1 special prg. Can she still try to apply MEP? or SAP? Then only decide what to sign up?

If you're not sure, call the school and ask. They'll be willing to clear your doubts.

Wtv the case is, it's up to you whether you can cope with whichever special programmes you take. The school will prefer you not to cancel your application IF you happen to be selected.

Most of the time, students drop out of third lang because of tired of travelling(because it ends rather late), or tired of commitment(because you have other stuff in sch eg CCA).

As Jtoh has said, if you're strong in the 3rd language you take, it will help to pull your GPA up, in addition to putting you in an advantage over many other people because of your knowledge of a 3rd language. French for example is very useful because it is widely used in quite a number of countries.

My advice as a student who used to -but has dropped out of third lang- is to take the 3rd language and see what happens. it doesnt hurt to try. Especially with the new GPA computation system, even if your 3rd language itself is not good, it will not drag your GPA down.

You can always quit if you want to, either in June or December.(mid year/end of year)

The most important thing is to take the chance of learning a new language, a new culture, a new perspective.

Sec1 is the best year to try out new things.

Generally, the feedback from the girls is that the teachers are approachable and caring. Of course there is the odd teacher here and there but they're only human after all. I had a friend's dd whose grades were not very good and the teacher gave her special attention to guide her along. It was something that was much appreciated by my friend and her dd.
