Heard of some parents sending their kids for Sec 1 tuition 1 wk after psle.

Yes its true. Don't be surprise, i heard certain topics in maths and physics, the sch teachers expect you to know. And some things they are learning one year in advance in school. By mid of year 2, they have to buy year 3 maths assessment books, same for chinese. I know of a student, by the end of year 2, already finish O lvl syllabus at tuition center for one subject.

Daisyt, you forgot to tell sall that beginning of year 1 already bought year 2 HMT book A & B.

Next year HMT, 1A is a brand new bk, bk B is not available yet. I think during dd's P4, they changed the syllabus, so maybe her batch also has the same new syllabus textbk for Y1.

It's really scary some parents go to that extent to prepare the children. I also know one parent who was looking for tutors to teach her son 'A' level physics, chemistry and maths. and guess what, her son is only in sec 3.
ok, no more tv and comp, will start teaching dd from tomorrow onwards.

Hi Rosecy and Daisyt, so students with full exemption will have to go oversea for learning trip? Compulsory? Those with partial exemption means they only take exam for subjects they're weak at? :?

Its encouraged, not compulsory. If dont go, there are some kind of leadership programes to attend. Yes, partial take exams you don't meet the criteria. Full or partial, one can still choose to take end of year exams.

I think its for year 1 to 4.

to add on...this 'incentive' is part of IP's intent...to expose IP students to learning outside the normal O level curriculum and through different modes of learning...this is possible due to time saved from having to prepare for the O level exams. if a student is already so good through regular tests over the 1st 3 terms, then the time needed to sit for the end of year exams can be better spent on other enrichment for this group of students. as mentioned by justsay, to be fully exempted, a student needs GPA 3.8 out of 4.0. this is what the school mentioned.

too bad my child missed out by 0.2! if not i would sure send for the chengdu trip. the classmate only paid $600+ for the 8 days trip. but it is not sightseeing or usual type of holiday tour. the students who went need to do pre-trip research on a variety of topics, attend pre-trip lessons, do individual journal. and also a group project and presentation post-trip.

I also didn’t prepare Ds for ip program . Only got him to do some sec one vocabulary and science assessment books. And ask him to read some Chinese novels. Btw r there any assessment books tailored for ip program? If yes what r they and where to get them ?

From pri 1 to 6, I would get him to do the assessments and I would go thru his work, before running thru the mistakes w him. Do u still do this for secondary level ? Or just buy the assessments and leave the kid to do them himself ?

think best to let him manage on his own unless he really falls behind by a lot. there is a limit that we parents can do. for PSLE, we may be able to 'study' with them. dont think many of us can do that with our kids for the A levels.

if he is able to cope n keep up without tutions/additional work, that would be the best. not forgetting P6 to Sec 1 is quite a big adjustment in terms of workload (more subjects n new subjects), longer school hours, cca etc. we may unknowingly put on a lot of pressure on our kids thinking that more is better. it may not be the case. ultimately, it comes to finding a balance n what's most important is that your son enjoys learning n school life while doing well at the same time 😄

More is not better. It is the understanding that is important. Tuition is helpful only after own effort, the child still cannot understand the content. Then, somebody who can explain better than the text book and the school teacher will help alot.

I think the better way is to let him/her understand this. There is a coorect way to study for every subjects. If he/she find difficulty in understanding certain topics, then he/she should try different methods eg…different explanation from different books or find someone who can explain better, maybe is classmate or tuition teacher (last resort)

I went to the bkshop to check out the assessment books but find that the qns are very straightforward. I have a feeling that IP students are required to handle more 'interesting' qns. So up to now, I haven't got any assessment bks...

Are exam papers from other ip schools on sale or anywhere we can get copies?
I hope RV trs will let students practise RV's past exam papers, so can have an idea what to expect.
Oh dear! I'm starting to worry too much again!
Justsay is going to laugh at me again!

                      hi sall

i always thought that we have to let go during secondary level, ie no more hand holding like in primary school days. but after reading your post, i am worried if i should let go. i have already told ds that he is expected to do his revisions etc on his own in sec school but if he needs help in any subject, he must let me know early so that we can get him a tutor or sth…

do u intend to get your kid to do the papers/assessments, then check her work? i am not sure if we can still do that , taking into account their workload , cca , long hours in school etc…

btw, i have forgotten where you stay. will your dd be going to school on her own?

                      regards
