      Hi

      I’ve a request via PM for a MD solution to this question.

      Here’s my solution, hope this helps.

      I’ve specially selected a golden background; hope 2011 will bring golden luck to all members of KSP.

      Have a golden start to a happy, prosperous and healthy new year.

      Best wishes

      PS --- I've included more steps to show the flow of events.You may consolidate some of the steps as you become more familiar with MD.

        Harry Had 289 more stamps than Dominic.

        When Dominic gave away 161 of his stamps, he had half of what Harry had.
        How many stamps did Dominic have at the beginning?

        Pls help solving it using model.
        Thanks!

            statement 1. Harry= domi+289

            statement 2. Harry/2= domi-169

            statement 1- statement 2 ie

            (Harry - Harry/2 )= (domi-domi) + (289 - -169)
            1/2 Harry = 458
            Harry = 916

            Statement 1 - 916 = domi + 289
            therefore 916 - 289 = domi
            627 = domi

            I am not sure about the model

                      Hi,

                      H [----------][----------]
                      D [----------][161]<289>

                      1 u --> 161 + 289 = 450

                      450 + 161 = 611

                      Dominic had 611 stamps at the beginning.

                        statement 1. Harry= domi+289

                        statement 2. Harry/2= domi-169

                        statement 1- statement 2 ie

                        (Harry - Harry/2 )= (domi-domi) + (289 - -169)
                        1/2 Harry = 458
                        Harry = 916

                        Statement 1 - 916 = domi + 289
                        therefore 916 - 289 = domi
                        627 = domi

                        I am not sure about the model
                        no buddy noticed mine. I was checking what went wrong... this is it I put 169 for 161

                        statement 1. Harry= domi+289
                        statement 2. Harry/2= domi-161
                        statement 1- statement 2 ie

                        (Harry - Harry/2 )= (domi-domi) + (289 - -161)
                        1/2 Harry = 450
                        Harry = 900
                        Statement 1 - 900 = domi + 289
                        therefore 900- 289 = domi
                        611 = domi

                        :rahrah:
                        How to learn to draw the model .....and solve it..
